AMD HD6990 Graphics card causing PC black screen / shut down?

I hope someone out there can help me. I'm not overly knowledgeable on PCs but the problem I appear to have is that the AMD HD 6990 appears to stop working and close the graphics down (black screen but you can still hear game music in the background). You can't get back to windows so have to force a shutdown and reboot - I can't see anything in any logs and have followed another thread on here without solving the issue. I uninstalled AMD through control panel, ran Fusion to clean, rebooted and reinstalled AMD 12.11.beta 11 drivers and 12.11 cap2. Earlier today I tried the latest AMD drivers - again without solving the problem. Black screen happens whilst browsing web, gaming, and is more frequent now.

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 960 @ 3.20GHz (58 degrees each core whilst running a benchmark)
Graphics AMD HD6900 series (72FPS min22.1 max 161.6 on Heaven benchmark and didn't go to black screen)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 12.0 GB
Total Physical Memory 12.0 GB
Available Physical Memory 10.2 GB
Total Virtual Memory 24.0 GB
Available Virtual Memory 22.0 GB
ASUS Motherboard P6X 580E

I have rehoused the Graphics card into another motherboard slot - this made no difference. The PC occasionally gives 3 beeps when starting up - I rehouse the graphics card and it runs smooth again for a while (3 beeps = graphics problem?) If you ask me to do / test something can you please give me step by step guidance or a link to guidance - I'll try anything you can think of. Failing that, is there anywhere you can recommend in the UK to fix this for me? The PC is out of warranty now.

To end this thread - I took the PC back to the Gaming PC Supplier and they did stress tests on the card - the card stood up to all tests but did go black screen once or twice when they actually entered my game (LOTRO this time). The card manufacturer totally refused to do anything as the card is now out of warranty and they would not take into account the numerous tickets I'd raised. The shop tried an NVidia card in the PC and it ran sweet - no black screen crashes. So the outcome is - no solution really - AMD card crashes with WOW and LOTRO and is £900 worth of useless junk. An expensive lesson in what not to buy.

As I said earlier to narrow down the search you need to check the MB, now you don't have any onboard video, so you have to borrow a GPU to test.

If that does the same then PSU comes to play. BTW when the system starts do you hear any beep sound coming from the MB ?

I suspect the MB, PSU and GPU.

I don't know anyone who could lend me a GPU - Cougar Computers replaced the graphics card and this is the second GPU where we have black screens whilst the game / music plays in the background. We have to force a shutdown and reboot. I just moved the graphics card into the second slot on the ASUS P6X 580E and also removed the power from the PSU then reattached the power. I've done this in the past to no avail. Nothing seems to run too hot - the processor (Core i7 960) is running up to 42 degrees on each core, 58 degrees when running a benchmark. The graphics card on Heaven Benchmark gave 72FPS Min 22.1 Max 161.6 and the PC hasn't yet crashed. I don't know what other tests to run to isolate the cause of these black screen graphic failures. I am desperate as the PC has crashed 5 times this morning.

Just ran CPUID monitor whilst gaming. Max CPU temp per core is 55 degrees and max HD6990 is 77 degrees and 1.12V

Thanks for your reply Lonewolf7 - the MB gives one beep at start up. On the odd occasions it does 3 beeps (indicating graphics failure I believe?) I have to pull the cable (graphics card to monitor) out and reseat it or pull the graphics card out and put it back.

If you can see anything wrong please let me know. I'll cross fingers and will report back whether all is OK (If it is we've had 2 years of hell for nothing - but every little I learn helps). I only have one GPU so is that reading on ATI crossfire (2 GPUs ) OK?

The 6990 is a dual GPU card so it showing 2 gpu's is completely normal.

I had 2 6990's (quad) for about a year and liked it for the most part and hardly any real issues although they can get pretty loud.

If your card is in the 1st bios position the clocks should be 880/1250 @ 1.175v. I ran mine at 880/1375 24/7... anyway, what power supply do you have?

Method I used for uninstalling and reinstalling drivers.

Method:

1) Download Driver Fusion HERE.
2) Download Catalyst 13.8 Beta drivers HERE. but don't install.
3) Custom uninstall all AMD software through Control Panel, select everything and reboot.
4) Run Driver Fusion and clean AMD display drivers - reboot.
5) Re-install CCC and reboot.

In CCC there is an option to run Crossfire for applications that have no associated Catalyst Application Profile (6990 is CF). Make sure it's checked. Fixes games that do not officially support multiple cards. ie: Assassins Creed 3.

Well I logged into my game LOTR online - not that much of a demanding game on the graphics card - I got through the log in screens into the game and the screen went blank (black). I looked at the Techpowerup log (I installed it as you obviously find it informative).
GPU Core Clock [830MHz] , GPU Memory Clock [1250MHz] , GPU Temperature [67°C] , Fan Speed (30%) , Fan Speed (1694RPM) [RPM] , GPU Load [75%] , GPU Temp. #1 [67.5°C] , GPU Temp. #2 [71°C] , GPU Temp. #3 [72.5°C] , Memory Usage (Dedicated) [650MB] , Memory Usage (Dynamic) [263MB] , VDDC [1,1750V] , VRM Temperature [53.6°C] ,
Do any of those figures give a clue? The figures were right before failure. Aghhhhhhhh /cry
Can you recommend somewhere I can rely upon to find and fix whatever causes the failure? I just want a stable gaming PC and am at my wits end now.

Try a service center or a local tech. Its out of your hand now cause you don't have access to another GPU or PSU. And if you want to be sure which component is faulty then you going to test it. I still suspect the GPU and somewhat the PSU. The MB is looking fine since it gives just a beep on boot.
