Hey guys, I've got some time before I can use my system again, just RMA'd my video card so I've got like 20 days or so before it'll be back at the soonest I'm guessing. When I was running with it before, I was hitting about 60c at my lan party I went to after playing games. My system specs are below, with stock heatsink/fan on the cpu. So while I've got some time before my card comes back, I'm gonna try to get a good heatsink/fan and case.

So heres one that I was looking at getting a Thermaltake Extreme Volcano 12, http://xoxide.com/thvo12.html. It seems to be a very good fan and I like how it has a variable speed knob that you can put in the front. Another nice thing about it is the price. It will be going on my barton 2500+ cpu, if there are any conflicts lemme know but it should fit. Also, there is an option to get thermal paste and shims, I don't have either of these things, would you recommend that I get them? I know what the thermal paste does, but I am not quite sure what the shims do.

If you guys have any other suggestions for me for fans lemme know and I'll check em out. Thanks

I haven't used that particular heatsink, but unless somebody changes my mind, I won't buy another thermaltake product. I had a Volcano 7 I believe... the damn thing sounded like a hairdryer on overdrive. I even bought a unit that would allow me to control the fan speed (similar to what they are offering on the fan you linked to)... still no dice.

Would it keep the processor cool? Yeah. Unfortunately, the noise was unbearable.

It was so bad that I went back to the store and bought a heatsink similar to what AMD ships with their retail product (my Athlon 2100 was one of the faster processors at the time). I've been using it ever since... but a bearing must be going bad because it's starting to rattle.

I was browsing this forum to get a decent and *quiet* heatsink.

Any ideas anyone?

you are not the only person who finds thermaltake products to be horribly loud.

My sudgestion is you get an slk800, 900 or even an sp-97 (if you have the dough) and slap an 80 or 92mm panaflo on that, good and relitivly quiet cooling.

I just picked up a Thermalright sp97 for my 1900+. If your motherboard has the appropriate holes, I would highly recommend this heatsink. I paired a Sunon 92mm fan with it and watched my idle temps drop 9 degrees to ~31C. I can once again run seti all day and not worry. Under full load it rarely goes above 50C, and that is with a 27C case temp. I have been running set constantly since I installed. I'm sure you could get a better fan to pair up with this heatsink, but the Sunon is doing just fine for me. Plus it isn't very loud.
