AMD Navi Graphics, Zen Cores to Unite in Next Xbox, PlayStation - Report

Is it wise to employ a boost clock speed on a console?

In the case of the Ryzen 2700X CPU, clock speeds will boost from 3.7GHz to 4.3GHz depending on thermal conditions. If that's any indicator of how Gonzalo will behave, then can we expect XBox Two and Playstation 5 to change its clock speed based on thermal measurements? Consequently, will games have to dynamically reduce their resolution and detail level to compensate for the change in CPU speed?

Didn't Sony help finance Navi?
So MS might need to use Vega if Sony have exclusivity to Navi.
At least that is the rumor.

Sure why not as long as thermals are kept in check. Also it may just be single core boost which would limit the thermals a lot and likely would not run into any of the issues you are thinking about.

Obviously this is not confirmed so could change, but guessing the boost clocks are more like developer options. Max boost but reduced GPU speed, or only 4 cores at max speed and the GPU at normal, etc. Base speed is more like OS usage.

Normally consoles have a lower than actual max speed to account for throttle or battery life, like the Switch, so either way I wouldn't worry to much about throttling.

Even game designers cannot completely predict CPU load, as games are interactive. I can imagine a 3.2ghz boost working out well for the console. I'd be happy with a fixed 3.2ghz also though. I don't think the power draw would be that high.

I was also suspicious of the boost clock. My understanding is it might be AMD's spec depending on MS and Sony thermal solutions and configurations.. but the 1ghz base is disturbing still. At those times, Zen 2 chip probably wouldn't be faster than the Jaguar cores in the Xbox One X.

It might make some sense, since games aren't constantly loading those cores, and the boost clock would be useful during loadings and intense period, granted developers don't code their games to be CPU heavy across all 8 cores. The problem with the latter is that I don't think console makers would take such a risk. I think they'd rather tweak their thermal solutions rather than advertise their chips as 1ghz base.

low-binned downclocked versions of the chip demoed at CES, with that empty spot under the Zen2 chiplet occupied by a low-binned downclocked version of Navi? basically leftovers set-aside for an entire year after Zen2/Navi launch, so, nearly free to make / huge margins? i mean, why wouldn't this happen?

as for the boost/heat concerns... if the CES chip was likely a 65w part, then this low clocked SoC could be super easy to keep cool (even with the daft ventilation console designers keep going with to maintain the "it's not a PC!" appearance).

200ge
3.2Ghz CPU base clock
1Ghz iGPU base clock

Just saying...they could use two of those to keep things as similar to the old models as possible, with new GPU cores.
Having some cores boost up much higher then others causes heavy stutter, people with FX CPUs(intel too although less because they boost more cores to the same level) can sing you some songs about it,so don't expect much in that area.

A big cpu upgrade from current gen, to be sure. But not much of a gpu upgrade from the X1X. I don't think console gamers are really asking for a new generation so soon. They're happy with this generation. The 360/ps3 generation was much longer, and performance per dollar improvements have slowed even more since then. Logically this generation should be longer than the last, not shorter. Sony and MS will ask everyone to jump to the new Gen next year but what will they offer? 4k visuals already offered on the x1x? Perhaps some minimal raytracing that you will hardly notice? Much more cpu power but how will they demonstrate that to consumers? Honestly they should be targeting a 2022 launch date with a more substantial gpu upgrade.

So my i7 4790 + 1070ti will probably be stonger, again, then "next gen" consoles... Very sad indeed.. i used to love consoles, but what's the point now if they can't compete with 5yr old pcs...

Consoles are going to have a different boost configuration than PCs it's more like 1Ghz idle speed, and 3.2Gh constant all core boost when gaming... 3.2Ghz is nothing for a 12nm APU to hold for all core boost in fact it's below the base clock for alot of 12nm AMD CPUs.

First off, your GPU is an architecture that's only 2.5 years old, not 5 years old.

Not only that, but it's a 180w power-hungry beast. There was literally only a single console generation in history where consoles pulled 100+ watts total from the wall (that being the 360/PS3 generation), so expecting that sort of raw power-hungry performance is quite unreasonable - the 360/PS3 console generation was the exception, not the rule.

Secondly, calling your 4c/8t Haswell @ 4GHz turbo (remember, a 4790 non-k has lower clocks than a k-sku) stronger than an 8c/16t Zen2 @ 3.2GHz turbo? Don't make me laugh.

Single threaded performance is no longer the end-all for modern games - look no farther than the considerable performance uplift between an i7-7700k (4c/8t) and an i7-8700k (6c/12t) which have identical IPC.

And since even the XB1/PS4 reserve 2 cores for background and OS tasks, it's not unreasonable to suggest that the PS5/Scarlett will at least do the same thing, therefore leaving games with the same 6c/12t config as the i7-8700k.

Since when has MS and Sony used the same soc?
Similar hardware yes, but not the same.
Whit that in mind, then I don't think it's a soc for MS or Sony.
This can be a new APU, or a soc to an unknown player just like the Chinese console/PC

Personally I think that the probability of Sony and Microsoft releasing a new console for Christmas 2019 is about %60-40 for a new release!!

The first Xbox came out in November 2001, XBOX 360 was released November 2005 4 years later, and XBOX ONE was November 2013. November 2019 would be six years later but the Jaguar APU is getting a bit long in the tooth especially when compared to the upcoming Ryzen with NAVI cores! AMD NAVI roadmap has it appearing 2nd half 2019 so it would make sense for a new console release November 2019.

Besides Dr. Su is very confident that AMD would see revenue growth in the high single digits. She has almost a cat with the canary look. Shipping half a $billion new XBOX and PS5 APU's would certainly see that revenue growth achieved!

There is absolutely no good reason for MS or Sony to wait for November 2020. There will be beaucoup 7nm Ryzen APU's in the wild and the existing consoles just can not compare. 7nm will be pretty mature as well.

In fact analysts like to point out that AMD is loosing revenue from reduced console shipments!! Another indicator that something new is very close. The channel is being cleared.

the only things that make me think 2020 are the console refreshes they both sold, and that they typically need to launch new AAA titles alongside (which takes dev time to optimize with the new hardware).

That's just it, the only thing different will be a new generation of APU along with 100% software compatibility.

Like I said the fact that both Sony and Microsoft are not building a lot of new inventory is they want to channel to clear some. When PS4 and XBOX were first released AMD saw $200-350million per quarter just in consoles alone. Now AMD is seeing a large decline in console revenue. I just do not think there is enough XMAS 2019 PS4 and XBOX inventory in the channel.

Dr. Su also projects a strong confidence that AMD will make their growth numbers for 2019. And again she has a certain "cat with the canary" or "wink, win, nod, nod" in her interviews. At CES 2019 her presentation with Microsoft's Head of Gaming Phil Spence seemed to indicate a more immediate release of their collaborative efforts.

I also think that Microsoft and Sony both are playing any release very close to the vest. I just do not see them waiting 20+ months to release a new console.

7nm Ryzen Cpu's and APU's will be releasing later this year. The consoles will have to keep up as one of the major selling points is their claim of "better than or as good as a PC". AMD is also releasing Radeon 7nm NAVI later this year as well. I just do not see the consoles wasting an entire year with obsolete Jaguar APU's. The consoles, in order to stay relevant, have to stay current with new generations of hardware.

It's like I said. It's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!
