So this is my situation. I want to upgrade my current Desktop. I wanted to save my current build and make new one from scratch but it seems I won''t be able so I'll keep my Case, DVD, PSU(Fortron 400W), HDD(Sata2 500GB) and add up to this.
In the past few weeks I was reading a lot of stuff about AMD/Intel and now I have the impression that there's no build, budget or not, where AMD would be prefered. However I want to post my main requirements for the new Desktop ( what I expect to get) and I hope to get suggestions for builds that will meet these requirements.
I've just started my career as a programmer so I intensively use Visual Studio 2010/2012 and now it''s frustrating because I wait too long for almost every operation I perform. So the main requirement is to get fluent workflow using Visual Studio.
The second most common thing I use my Desktop is watching films. With the current build I have no problem watching 720p movies but it's impossible to watch normally 1080p.
The third requirement is the one that increase the price of the build the most (I think) so this is where I really need your advice. Mostly the weekends I like to play e certain games - (mostly RTS, RPG - Civilization V, StarCraft 2). I am no longer gamer so I don't seek extreme performance but still want to be able to play these games (and similar to them) with an acceptable quality on my 23` 1920x1080 HP monitor.
I may be mistaken but I think in some articles as advantage to AMD is pointed exactly the faster execution of programs and videos, and also, even though my last build was long time ago in my mind AMD is the way to go when you want acceptable performance on lower price. However I've seen some benchmarks where even I3 beats the FX4170 so I'm really confused.
When you offer your builds please be as specific as possible. If I go with an Intel build I may decide to use the integrated GPU at least for a month or even more if I'm satisfied with what I get, and if I go with AMD I have to buy GPU which may result at price compareable to that of Intel build without GPU or even more, so please provide what MB do you suggest, what CPU, what RAM and how much of RAM memory. Another thing I'm wondering about is do I have to worry too much about the fact that the different MB offers different numbers for RAM slots and as far as I know it's better to have less RAM but occuping each slot then to have one stick of RAM.
So yeah, basically that's it.

Thanks in advance.

No processor alone can satisfy your needs. This chart will help -

Intel i3...
You will need to replace that PSU if you want to add a graphics card.

I would grab an i3. You will be able to use the system (not for gaming) on the integrated graphics and save for a decent GPU.

You want 8gb RAM. no more, no less. 2x4gb.

If you get an i3, get a b75 motherboard.

Thanks for your answer. Would you suggest a good B75 MoBo. Have in mind that maybe someday in the future I may want to switch to i5 or i7 but no `K` edition? And also what RAM memory do you suggest 1600 or higher and which brand? Lol, sorry, but I just saw your signature. I see you are using i3 yourself. Do you think that if at the end I get something similar to yours it will meet my requirements (even for gaming)?

ASRock B75M-GL R2.0 will be a great Motherboard. I have one ATM , but I am gonna replace it with a Z77 one. It supports all the 3rd Gen i5 and i7 CPUs. Yes , 1600MHz of RAM is great , no need for higher frequencies. Corsair is a great brand for RAM's , Coolers and Cases. Don't buy Corsair Vengeance RAM's though. They will block one of the two slots the ASRock B75M-GL R2.0 has. Buy any Corsair XMS3 RAM. They have smaller heatsinks and wont block any RAM slot.

Well even with intel you are not going to be gaming a whole lot on a igpu even the intel HD 4000 does not perform that well on games. In truth some of the newer AMD APU's will give you better gaming performance with games.

As for going intel or AMD it all comes down to what you want from your system. I have three rigs two of which are AMD/ATI systems. A FX-8120 with a Crossfire HD 7950 and a FX-8350 with a Crossfire 7970 and my last one is a i5 3570K with a SLI GTX 670. Both of my AMD/ATI rigs can keep up with gaming just fine. I run all of my rigs on 3 Asus 27" monitors at 5760x1080 and there is no performance loss even with my AMD/ATI rigs.

In regards of raw performance yes the i5 rig is most likely faster but my monitors are all 60Hz and I am able to game with any of my rigs at full 60fps Vsync'ed no problem.

Hi there CommentariesAnd More!

Would you make, if you don't mind of course, a more in-detail explanation on what to choose. From the first post I got the feeling that you have something to say about AMD as well and it would be really interesting for me to know if AMD should stay out of my sight for sure. Also I really wonder how satisfied I'll be if I get i3. I don't want to buy a CPU which I'll get rid of after few months. Do you think with the right RAM and GPU an i3 configuration will fulfill my needs as they are described in my original post?
Thanks

No processor alone can satisfy your needs. This chart will help -
| Visual Studio | Integrated GPU
Intel i3 - | NO | NO
Intel i5 - | YES | NO
Intel i7 | YES | NO
AMD FX 4 CORE - | NO | NO
AMD FX 6 CORE - | YES | NO
AMD FX 8 CORE - | YES | NO
AMD APU A10 - | NO | YES

So yeah , I guess try this -
AMD FX 8350 + ASUS Sabertooth 990FX + Radeon 7790 - 540 USD
OR
INTEL i5-3570K + ASRock Z77 Extreme4 + GTX 650Ti Boost - 530 USD

These Configs will satisfy your needs. Select one of these and I will suggest you the rest of the rig.

Sorry, I was out. So I guess I would go with the Intel build because I can save money from the GPU at least for the first month or so and still have a working machine. Also - I have never OC and I don't plan to. So Intel "K"-series don't hold additional value for me. Is there a way to save money from the MB and/or the CPU having this fact in mind?

AMD Build can get cheaper and better , if you opt for a cheap motherboard. Tell me your budget for only the rig , I select the rest of the rig.

My budget is 400USD for the MoBo+CPU+RAM, could be more, but I prefer less.

Well, it's a standard ATX case. I don't think I can find some exact model. But the name is "Dandy".
