I am building a rig for the first time and have been doing tons of research to decide what would I build with an AMD CPU and what I would build with an Intel CPU. But in the end I am still stuck on which CPU fits my situation best.

My budget is around 700 with out the OS. I like to game, but not a lot, from games ranging from Minecraft to Arma 3. But I am about finished with Engineering school and I will be needing a good PC to handle heavy 3D CAD software such as Solidworks and Pro-E also I would like to get into 3D printing.

So my CPU budget is in the 100-225 range which gives me wiggle room but the cheaper the better.

Thanks for the help!

I would suggest the most popular CPU here at Tom's for your CAD work, it is unlocked and you can OC it for a bit more performance. The i5 4670k if you have a Z87 MB or the i5 3570k if you have a Z77 MB, these seems to be at the top of your price range, I would think an i7 would serve you better but they are more expensive. Hope this helps....

Well from what I have heard CAD software doesn't harness hyper-threading, (meaning it can't use all 8 cores) which you can get in a fx 8320 or fx 8350. So your best bet is to grab an i5 if its in your budget :)
