My new pc is mainly going to be used for gaming and I want to know which company makes a better processor for that purpose. I'm going all out on this pc, radeon 9800, at least a gig of ddr400 etc, which processor would suit me better?

Either one will do the job. It all depends on your budget. I have seen many people say the amds are better if all your doing is gameing. But it really comes down to what you want.

I find AMDs to be much cheaper, much faster, and much more overclockable for gaming. The 1700+ JIUHB, 2100+ (ALL TbredB) 2600+ or Barton 2500+ are all good overclockers. I currenty run a TbredB 2400+ oced to 2463 MHz, a 3425+ PR in SiSoft Sandra.

eBay, kick ass!

Since you said that you are going all out, then the new P4 3.0 GHz 800MHz FSB (200 MHz quad pumped) is the top performer in all areas. Intel has had the fastest CPU for a long time now. The only reason to go with AMD is for the price. mid-high end CPU's are similarly priced, but low end AMD CPU's are priced much better than low end P4's. Go with Intel if you want the best. If you want something that is good enough and that will cost MUCH less, then you could consider AMD. (referring to the AXP 1700+ 'B' and not the 2800+)

Intel price drop on April 22.

The video card is the more importasnt factor for games now as even the slowest Celeron P4 and Duron can handle almost all games available today with easy.

I have to agree with Lamoni on this one. If you are going "all out" on this PC, then your choice is easy. You should pick a i875-based mobo, like the P4C800, and good-quality DDR400 along with a 3.0Ghz, 800Mhz HT-enabled P4. That´s the best thing around right now, no doubt about it.

Intel price drop on April 22.
It´s good to know that!

Anyway, I think it might be a bit optimistic to say that the video card is so important that you could run a R9700 Pro on a Duron/Celeron and play the latest games admirably well. You memory/processor system might be a bottleneck in that cases... Of course, this mainly applies to the latest games. (Doom 3, for example, will surely complain about running on a Duron or Celeron! Over-the-top example here, of course)

You have the money go wiyh P4 3.04 800 FSB. What two weeks plus. The 3.2 GHZ 800 FSB Northwood should be out by than. ATI 9800 Is the best Vid card now. Till NV 35 hits the streets in Aug.

I agree. Well except for that part about NV35 and Nvidia. Nvidia better start putting its money where its mouth is soon...Right now their mouths are writing checks that their products can't cash. Go with the Radeon!

all out eh? Don't go AMD then! The current available setup that is the fastest around is the p4 3.06ghz 533fsb with 512MB pc3200 and radeon 9800 pro and the WD "special edition" drives will make your friends wet themselves!

now if you wanna wait a few weeks the p4 3ghz w/ 800fsb will be pretty fast!

For a high-end setup you're probably looking at a Canterwood chipset motherboard/3GHz+ P4 combo. Still not clear which Canterwood chipset motherboard is the front-runner as of now. Also, it is not clear which ones have certain problems that will be worked out on a future revision.

For video games either will do. The only place where I consistantly see a Pentium perform better than and AMD is with video conversion and editing.

That said, if money is no object then hands down the best CPU is the hyperthreaded P4 3.06. I expect this CPU will even beat the Hammer series when they come out.

ya thats why i'm waiting for springdale. It will be much cheaper and newer then canterwood so the bugs will have been worked out. But for now the current boards are fine. You don't really need the latest and the greatest.

from my understanding springdale is the next chipset that will be better than canterwood?

I'd still wait until prices go down. Sometimes prices go down is an indication that the production has been better refined. Better quality in my opinion.

Actually, Springdale won't be better than Canterwood. Springdale is Intel's mainstream 800 FSB chipset. Canterwood is targeted towards the performance/workstation market. Springdale will be the cheaper route to 800 FSB.
