Otoh it's not our job to make this guy an enthusiast. Maybe he should just buy the HP. Then later when he tries to upgrade 1 componant and realizes how computer manufacturers try to be like car makers and force you to buy a whole new system every year he might go our way. I like building my own systems, but I know each time that there's a chance something will go wrong in the process of shipping, in the compatability of things, or that later things might break and I might not have a warranty. So I have to pay close attention and I've had to learn some things. Not that I would trade that process for a crappy OEM computer, I love it. But it's not always easy street fun and games either.

Anyway I just mocked up a better system (incl. a monitor) for the same price ($1100) so it can be done. I lost my list in a java mix-up over at newegg so I can't show you. But I think the key is a cheaper vid card than the 7800gt, corsair valueselect RAM (prolly better than the HP and still cheaper with a lifetime warranty), a non-SLI board (unneeded), and a $100-$200 chip.

On that note, I will sadly admit, a pair of needlenose pliers and an Asus A8V don't mix very well. Almost $150 later, my old mobo now hangs on the wall, a useless chunk of silicon and metal.

So for the newbie, if you do choose to build a system, you had better be prepared to spend your own money to fix what you break. If you're lucky, an RMA will be issued, but only with a good vendor.

If you do the DIY route, only buy from reputable retailers like Newegg.com or ZipZoomFly.com, as they both readily accept most RMA requests and will ship you a new part within a week of receiving the one you spilled your coffee on...err....I mean it was DOA out of the box....

<grunting uncomfatably> ahh <thinking>I cant hold it in anymore must say amd good but cant start a fanboy war on a thread like this it hurts so bad <deeply exhaling>ahhh it hurts

lol, piddy, go outside looking at chicks or something... that helps 😛

btw, does the threadstarter need a monitor or not? that would alter the budget.

Ive not been around for a few days, can anyone tell me whats going on here?

OT:
Pentium D 920
HIS Excalibur X800 XL IceQ II
ASUS P5ND2-SLI
2x 512 MB DDR2-533 OCZ Value DIMMs
Thermaltake Big Typhoon
2x WD Caviar WD2500YD (RAID Edition)
+
Case, PSU, optical drives you desire

Well... it DOES sum up to around 1000-1200$ and you WONT have a 21" LCD in it, but you got some REAL good GPU in the system.
