AMD or Intel

Hi, currently I have an AM3+ mobo andi heard good things about the i5 4690k, and the AMD 8350. However I know the i5 is better but is it worth spending an extra $70 on a lga mobo?
I use my pc for gaming.

Thats up to the eye of the beholder. In my opinion no, not yet anyways I would wait until the 8350 really starts showing its age and I dont think that has happened yet the amd fx series can still hang with intel in most games.

EDIT: Just reread your post do you not already have an amd FX cpu? You only have an AM3+ mobo? With no cpu in it.

If you don't mind spending the extra money, Intel's offerings will likely serve you better. The entire AM3 chipset, and the 32nm die, are ancient compared to some of Intel's newer stuff, and the motherboards are lacking features that may prove useful in the future because the processor is too old to support those features. The 8350 may get some extra love with better multi-core support from DX12, but the FX processors are getting almost too old to recommend anymore, at least if you are looking for cutting-edge tech.

If you're gaming, then yes, go for the intel because it has much better single core performance, which is important considering most games don't use more than four cores. If you're thinking of rendering or streaming, go for the FX 8350 because it is an octa-core cpu, but it's single core performance is much weaker, so in games the 4690k will serve you much better (just look up benchmarks if you're unsure). I have the 4690k myself with an Asus Vii hero MB, and I am quite happy with it. And I can always overclock if I need a performance boost in the future, so that's a plus.

Edit: and as others have stated, the FX CPUs are pretty outdated in comparison to intel.

I have an amd fx 6300

Mostly gaming then Intel is the best route. Problem with AM3 is it is dead and the FX CPUs wont be getting much better for gaming as it stands so the i5 still will have a advantage.

I mean I hate to see you waste money but you can probably sell that AM3+ board and then use the money to put towards a LGA 1150 board.

Well one thing I will say that is definitely not worth it, is upgrading from a 6300 to an 8350. At the same clock speed the 6300 and 8350 will perform pretty much exactly the same in most games, I thought about doing that upgrade a while back but after looking at many different benchmarks I decided it was not worth it for a gamer. Just overclock that 6300 and it will perform just as well as an 8350 in most games.

Really depends on your budget and what am3+ board you already have. I've always ran AMD due to bang for buck but am quite open to using Intel when I can afford to do so.

But yeah what's your current board as you may not even be able to run a 8350 on it very well in the first place due to the 8350 being a pretty power hungry cpu

[edit] just stick with your 6300 and OC it if you have a reasonable board anyway :)

It depends on the kinds of games you play. CPU intensive games like arma 3 will benefit greatly from an intel cpu. However, if you look at a comparison on youtube you will see that the fx 8350 doest fall far behind the 4690k. If you had the money and patience to buy and reinstall your opertating system to a new motherboard then the i5 4690k is a great choice but if you don't play many cpu intensive games then I don't really see the need to invest in a new motherboard and more expensive cpu

It is hard to trust YouTube reviews because most are not done in an controlled environment like say Toms Hardware or Anandtech where they control the components to the only the board and CPU are different.

That is my opinion though.

I see what you are saying but I personally find them useful for getting a rough idea of the performance difference. And if it is carried out by a reputable channel like LinusTechTips they will usually try to keep the conditions as controlled as possible.

Well my CPU is dying and that is sort of why I am getting an upgrade, my question is, will it make a noticeable difference in a game like arma if i got an 8350 over the i5? Or games like fallout and later titles? Because I would like to save money.

If we are talking arma 3 or any arma engine game you are much better off going with intel. Arma seems to run like utter garbage on all amd cpu's either the developers couldn't or didn't optimize the game properly for amd cpu's. I do okay outside towns and cities but in them I drop to the 20s all the time its almost unplayable.
