Amd or intel

im thinking of buying the new amd lhenom II 920 cpu with a gigabyte 780g mobo. but my friends are telling me to stick to intel as i will lose out on performance. but most of the reviews which i have gone through suggest the phenom II 920 being faster than the q6600 and the q8200. im really confused plz suggest

Get whats cheaper. The peformace of those 3 cpus are all in the same ballpark. Not sure if your into overclocking but I would skip the AMD920 and get the 940BE and overclock it myself.

im into mild oc'ing the 940 is outta my budget the only reasion im in a fix is coz the q6600 is 65nm and consumes more power,the q8200 has a locked multiplier and has only4mb of l2 cache adn both are on lga 775 socket which is dead whereas the new am3 socket phenom II's will be compatible with ddr3 as well so it has an upgrade path!

In practice, both choices will have similar upgrade paths, since besides physical socket compatibility, you need BIOS upgrades, which are usually discontinued within a year after the MB is introduced. Also, DDR3 requires a different MB than DDR2, so you can't buy a DDR2 board now and expect to upgrade to DDR3 without changing MBs.

unless your willing to spend some serious cash on a high end intel, the Phenom II offers best performance for your money. The Phenom II Tri-core especially.

yeah the 720be is a beast but wanna go for a quad core as i wont be upgrading nymore for sometime after this! so it should be phenom II rite over the q6600 and q8200?

Phenom II X4 920 actually beats the Q8300 in a lot of benchmarks, not just the Q6600 and Q8200. However if you purchase the 920 and decide to switch to DDR3 you will need a new processor, motherboard, and ram. This is because the 920 and 940 were released with only DDR2 memory support and are only compatible with socket AM2+, if you wait until next month the 925(AM3 version of the 920) should be out and at the same price point.

The only thing holding back the i7 in gaming is the Nvidia drivers so all you have to do is wait for better Nvidia drivers then i can promise you your i7 will toast the phenom 2's. Its been proven with ATI GFX cards. And the i7-920 is in the same price as the cheepest phenom 2. And what you basicly saying is that amd has just beaten intel's slowest quad core -- WOW!

Yea, and you pay for it too. At the price point the OP is considering, PhenomII is a winner. Only Core2Quad worth getting now are Q9550 and Q9650, both priceyer than the Phenoms.

So your saying the Nvidia drivers are holding back a cpu? I7 may be better, but not by much in single card set ups where the gpu is the bottleneck anyways, even the C2D 8XXX series beats the I7 in some benchmarks I've seen.

AMD also beats more than just Intels slowest quad core, they actually beat most of Intel's C2Q series now.

As far as the price comment is concerned, I would really like to know what your smoking. The Phenom 2 line up runs $119 to $229 while the I7 is running $288 to $999. I'd also like you to find a good I7 motherboard for under $100 as well.

Just because the i7 920 has the same number as the PII 920 it does not mean you can compare them. To do a fair comparison you have to choose two processors of similar price (and ideally total price including motherboard).

Which is why you could say that AMD only do low-medium end CPUs, they have no high-end product. So you can't really compare a high-end with a mid-range.
It's like Rover don't do high-end supercars and that's why you don't usually race one against say a Noble M14.

Well I live in South Africa and the i7 and phenom 2's are the same price.

So your saying the Nvidia drivers are holding back a cpu? : No , this is not what i am saying the nvidia cards and the i7 dont work so good along YET , (bug in drivers) so thats the reason why the phenom 2 wins in some gaming benchemarks.
