as we all know , lower latency is what the AMD chips like


and isnt DDR2 supposed to have higher latency ?

Yes, good read.

But I'm still quite skeptical of the benefits here: 1Ghz HT bus is the card they'll play <i>for performance increases</i>, but will they get any? I don't think a 1Ghz HT bus will mean any tangible performance increase at all! So, yes, they'll go for a 1Ghz HT bus, and it will look good on paper, but I don't see this as that big a deal...

We've had someone around here benchmark a desktop using a 400, a 600 and even an 800Mhz HT bus, and there was no performance difference... Thus it wouldn't be very reasonable if transitioning to 1Ghz would increase performance by a lot!

This will only matter in Opterons, where HT is actually responsible for interprocessor communication.

(I could be wrong, anyway...)

Extra HT speed will be mainly just for marketing.

The real source of the S939 A64 speed bump should be non-ECC dual channel memory

Actually, no, a 5-10% gain is <i>not</i> to be expected from this. I'd say that, from what we've seen so far, I'd be surprised if we saw more than 1-2% gain due to 800->1000Mhz HT bus clock increase.

BTW, a 5-10% gain <i>is a major gain</i> in this context.

Consider this: the main factors to a computer's performance are its processor, memory and video card. Processor and memory don't connect via HT, but the video card does. However, as far as I know, video cards won't benefit because the currently available bandwidth is already overkill and latencies don't affect them that much at all.

So the other component would be hard disks; but they require only minimal bandwidth and their internal latencies are already way higher...

So in which way could this increase truly be good? Only if PCIe suddenly raises the bandwidth immensely in current systems... but I don't see that happening so quickly.

Like the guys said AMD isn't boosting Hypertransporting for a proformance boost now but for later. Right now it will help the Opterons later it will help AMD if DDR500 becomes a standared and even if it doesn't become officely supported Overclockers will love the boost in Hypertransporting as it makes it easier to use DDR500. We can see how good a FX at 2.8 with DDR500 is by looking at the Review on Toms about the FX overclocked to 2.8. (at least I think the review uses DDR500 its all very confusing as the artical was all messed up on how the overclocking was done but if this is true I want to see what the FX looks like with 3ghz or 3.2ghz with DDR500)
