Hi all,
Just wondering, is the AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition good for gaming?
I mean what I want is to have the most bang for the least buck. Are tri-core comparable in performance to this quad? has gaming reached a stage where it now makes use of all 4 cores efficiently?

I want to be able to play games that come out next year without OCing.

So whats the verdict?

YEs the 955 is good for a gaming rig.
yes triple cores are all you need currently, as there are not many games that utilize 4 cores much less 6 or 8, but the quads are more future proof than the triples IMO.

If you dont plan on OC you might want to consider the 965 for the extra cpu cycles.

Hi newcomer and welcome to the Tom's hardware forum.

1- The Tri cores are enough for almost 90% of the games that u can find today.
2- With a quad core u get some additional features like more processing power for heavy work and more future proof.
3- The X4 955 is one of the best AMD high end CPU and i'm pretty sure that can handle the future games for at least one or one and a half year
