I currently have a HP Pavilion desktop running an Athlon II x4 630 (socket AM3). The motherboard is a Pegatron Corp Violet 6. The socket is the same, so is there any reason the new processor would not work?

Any input, would be appreciated.

HP's documentation says that CPU is supported, so you should be okay on that end. The Nvidia chipset it uses wasn't the greatest but you should still see a healthy bump in performance. You will be using more power, so if your power supply is low wattage, and if it's as old as the system, it might be worth thinking about getting a new one. Make sure you have an appropriate heatsink/fan for it too, if it doesn't come with the stock cooler. Also, replace the CMOS battery if you haven't already done it. And update your motherboard bios if by some chance there's a newer version available.
The Athlon II X4 630 is a 95W Cpu and the Phenom II X4 980 is a 125w cpu the Athlon II X4 630 has no L3 Cache and the 980 has L3 Cache witch will help a lot when gaming I've seen games run more smooth with any Amd processor that has L3 Cache than a Amd processor without L3 Cache but if your motherboard supports a 125w cpu then go for it if it does not the Phenom II X4 980 won't work at all in your motherboard.

((***New possibility*** AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Processor, Black Edition (HDT90ZFBGRBOX)....any thoughts))

I checked for bios and doesn't seem to be any that I could find....

Just a FYI, The X4's stuck cooler is only good if your room temperature is below 20" Celsius, I have a x4 980BE and the cooler was good during winter and spring but at summer I had to get a better one because the cpu would get realy hot and the cooler will get really loud ...
