AMD processor upgrade question

I currently have am AMD A8-5500 CPU, on am A55BM-A/M32BF/DP_MB motherboard. Can I upgrade the CPU, and if so, what would be the best choice?

I'm not a gamer.I use this computer for research, as I am working on my doctorate.

You will need to update your BIOS with that older A55 chipset, but you have options available with an A8 or A10. I would look toward a 65w CPU in the A8-7600 or the A10-7860k.

No upgrade you can do to that CPU is worth it. get more ram or an SSD.
Eithe that, or, if your research requires alot of CPU horsepower and you would like to cut the time of execution, you will have to look into a platform change and an i3 or i7, depending on the nature of teh research.(single thareaded task vs multithreaded)

If you're working towards a doctorate then I imagine that most of your time is spent typing dissertations. A CPU upgrade isn't worth it but upgrading to an SSD certainly is, assuming your PC doesn't have one already. As long as your PC has 8GB of RAM, you're unlikely to need more.

Perhaps a more comfortable mouse and keyboard would be better purchases?

No available CPU upgrade, for that motherboard, is worth it. As others have said, an SSD, and more ram make more sense. If you really do need more CPU horsepower, then you are better off switching to an Intel based build.

if you are not a gamer then what is the point on getting a new "faster' processor and the A8 5500k is enough to meet your needs
