[SOLVED] AMD R7 240

Hoping to get a steer from the group - I tried searching to no avail.

Could I operate an AMD R7 240 in X1 configuration on PCIE 3.0 with limited penalty?

I have an mATX board with two X1 slots; I would like to run 2 x R7 240 cards together for HashCat usage. There aren't any decent comparative available - figures available for PCIE 3.0 X1 throughput (985MB/s = 8Gbps) must link to to card memory bandwidth (28.8Gbs)?

Any advice appreciated.

PCIe bandwidth only matters if the video card needs data from outside sources to do its job. If all the data it needs is contained in VRAM, then all that's hampered is how often the CPU can peg it with instructions.

Though given you're using it to run a hashing algorithm, there's not much a CPU needs to do once it tells the GPU to go and you don't need a whole lot of memory to crunch those kinds of numbers.

The processor is a 9th Gen i5 so I'm sure the GPU is the bottleneck, but hopefully suitable for hashing if configured as two cards, both on X1 PCIE 3.0 interface.

If it makes you feel any better, a lot of mining rigs use PCIe x1 to connect the GPU to the system.

However gaming is another story, it may not work very well depending on the game.
