AMD R9 280 1080p.

Hello,

I was wondering whether the R9 280 is still a good graphics card for 1080p gaming at around 60 FPS. Also, will this card work with a 500W PSU?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi, yes the R9 280 can be a good 1080p card to this day, however you can't expect 1080p Maxed out @ 60 FPS.
You can probably expect 1080p Medium with 50 FPS, that if you have a decent processor and at least 8 GB of RAM.
And yes, 500w should be enough for a single R9 280.

Is the R9 270X similar in performance? and if not, how will it perform at 1080p?

There aren't many GPU reviews out there anymore that show the 270x and 280 in their benchmarks, especially in DX12 games currently. You can get an idea however looking at DX11 game benchmarks of GPUs like in this example having a 270x and 380 in it. The 380 is about 5-7% faster than a 280:

I run my 280 (Gigabyte 7950GHz edition really.) on a Superflower Leadex platform 450W. The card is supposed to peak at ~225W which I'm sure mine does because Gigabyte locks the voltage at the max for the GPU. This is exactly half of my PSU output, but I don't mind running my PSU closer to 80% of output.

As for performance I can't really say. I've got a semi beastly setup, but I only really play TF2. I've never had an issue getting other games to run with high settings. I don't believe in running 8x AA though at 1080. 2x is fine. I doubt it maxes things out anymore but you should be able to run all games with good settings. I think only just now are gaming coming out where they say the recommended specs are higher than the 280.

Edit: forgot about your 270X question. The 270X isn't that much slower than the 280. I honestly can't remember why I picked the 280 over the 270X. I think it was because at the time the 270X, the 7870 didn't come in a 4GB flavor. Or if it did it cost more than the 280. (7950.) Both cards have aged well and now even the 270 (7870) is faster then the 760. If you need a gaming GPU on the cheap this isn't a bad way to go. Just be careful of overused mining cards.
