I have a new gaming rig that I built. Amd F2A88XM-D3h motherboard, amd x4 860k quad core cpu, 8gb ram, Sapphire tri-x R9-290 4gb gpu with HDMI. I connect to my Sony str dg710 6.1 surround sound receiver through hdmi to my PC and roku 3. All drivers on pc are up to date.

My roku does 5.1 dts and DD correctly to the receiver and sounds great but the pc through the gpu only outputs PCM stereo!

My old pc with an old Intel q6600 cpu and old Radeon 1gb gpu with HDMI output all surround sound correctly but this newer pc with everything bigger and faster but only pushes stereo.

What am I doing wrong...?

In volume selection it shows my receiver just like the old pc did. But it has always only shown 2.0 stereo option never 5.1 or 7.1... I read that only analog surround sound shows.

My receiver is definitely setup for 5.1 because the roku 3 plays everything perfectly with 5.1 to the same receiver.

Just in case anybody is still watching this: I have the same exact problem. I have a R9 290 (XFX, Black version I think), hooked it up via HDMI to my brand new LG home cinema set, and the set only get's recognized as 2.0 device. No options to switch it to 5.1 or even 7.1 output.
I do know what coolcole01 was talking about, I tried all of that. Tried hooking it up to my onboard HDMI outlet as well, same difference. Updated onboard sound drivers, updated AMD drivers including the audio drivers, updated Realtek software/driver for mainboard. No solution, my LG soundsystem only gets recognized as 2.0, can't set it to anything else.
The sound system itself seems to work perfectly fine. The test it did was perfect, all speakers work, when they were supposed to make sound during test, they did. Hooking up an USB HDD worked as well, playing a dolby 5.1 6 channel audio movie on it was fricking awesome, surround works perfectly, Just my computer won't acknowledge that this sound system is very well capable of producing fine surround sounds.
What else can I do?
I searched the net for days now, sent a mail to LG itself, but I'm too impatient to wait. Apparently OP in this thread has the exact same problem as I do.
But nobody seems to have had an answer. So that's why I'm asking again.
Oh, btw, to prevent anyone from saying: "you need to set it to 5.1 in the windows configuration herp-derp", I perfectly know how to do that. Even my headphones can be changed to 7.1 configuration in Windows (and they are connected via a frickin 3.5mm jack!). Doesn't have any effect, but I know where and how to do it, just those options never even show up for the LG system.
If nobody knows an answer to this problem, I will probably have to get an optic fibre cable (S/PDIF) to hook up the LG thingy to my mainboard's audio output, which can actually be configured in Windows to make use of 5.1 or 7.1. But that's not exactly what I want, since a) that would mean an extra cable, while I could do audio AND video via HDMI, and b) I read a lot about that S/PDIF is way inferior to HDMI when it comes to frequency/bitrate.
So yea... Any help would be appreciated.

Dude I have the same problem if your even still on here any info you have too would be great, I have a 290x hdmi to my receiver the 5.1 config thin works but then when i play something its not in surround iv been so fucking confused for so long.

I feel your pain man. I have not managed to get it working in the meantime. I've had an answer from a user here, Pinhedd. I found one of his answers (very detailed) on basically the same topic: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2059625/amd-true-audio-290.html
I hope he's ok with me sharing it here. I tried the bit passthrough thingy, but as soon as I switched the video player to use passthrough, no sound would come out of my system, with regular sound, only stereo. So I think that my AV receiver just is not capable of handling surround sound from HDMI input. Which is one of the things that it's supposed to actually do. LG support basically are dicks, it's not their fault, it must be coming from wrong settings in my PC they say.
Another thing I tried was using the optical output of my mainboard, so I got one of those optical S/PDIF cables, hooked it up, and lo and behold. My AV receiver notices that the cable is plugged in. But when I set it to receive audio from that source and set my computer to route all audio through the onboard soundcard and the optical output, well... Nothing. No sound at all. So all of this comes down to: don't buy LG stuff if you want your homecinema to work with your computer or other external peripherals.
I also couldn't get it to work from my laptop, by the way, I also tried a Windows 7 setup as opposed to my regular Win 10 computer.
So here's the answer I received from Pinhedd, maybe it can help you:

Hi,

The problem is likely with your LG receiver.

One of the beautiful aspects of HDMI is that it incorporates and standardizes the exchange of information about device capabilities. Your LG receiver is responsible for identifying to your AMD GPU the audio formats that it is capable of processing natively. There is a standard format for doing this and the format is the same without regard to the number of different computer configurations.

One thing that you can try is to use a media player on your PC that supports bitstream passthrough. Most popular ones support this. Play a video on your PC that has an audio track that is encoded in Dolby Digital or DTS and see if you can get your receiver to perform the decoding rather than the media player's built in software decoder.

Although it probably wont help (and shouldn't help), try disabling your motherboard's onboard audio.

Also, make sure that the HDMI cable used is 1.4 compliant.

Best of luck with your setup!
