Hi,
I got a amd r9 290 with dual monitors, fan speed at 50% or 60%, memory clock at 5000mhz and gpu clock at 975mhz (don't know what the last two do tbh) and the idle temperature is around 60c and when I'm gaming with my case OPEN and an external fan (my case won't fit more than 7 fans) battlefield 4 at high the temperature reaches 90c. Should I downclock it? If so, how? I'm thinking about switching to nvidia but I cant afford it right now.

cheerios :)

Solution
Yeah, you need to set your GPU fan to auto...50-60% is not nearly enough to cool the reference 290. Also, the 290 is designed to run at 90°C constantly with no degradation to its lifespan. AMD knew it was a hot a running chip and so it's perfectly acceptable to see 90°C however anything over 90°C and your core clock (that 975MHz figure you provided) will throttle or lower itself to prevent overheating thus giving up some of your performance.

It'd behoove you to enable auto fan control or set fans at a constant 80% or something if the temperature bothers you that much. Those fans do get loud though so I hope you have headphones...

Solution
Install afterburner from msi...Works also with other brands.
With Afterburner you can control your temps :)
50-60% is way to low. I have the R9 280X and even I have to set the fanspeed higher when playing games.
The R9 290X is hotter then the R9 280X.

When I set my fans to auto it just goes to 20% and I was to scared to run it more than 60% but I'll make sure to run it at at least 80% and I read some forums which said this card should not exceed the temp of 90c

They're more than likely non reference cards.
