amd r9 290 shroud

i would like to know why the shroud and cooler is the same for all r9 290s and 290xs and what would be the best r9 290 to buy right now.

At the moment, it is so recent after release other companies haven't had the opportunity to make their own personalized coolers for the 290 yet. Give it a week, or even a few days, and custom coolers with factory overclocks and even modified PCBs will hit the market.

In other words, wait a few days. Other coolers should start to pop up shortly.

would you recommend the r9 290 or the 780 as i am building a gaming machine in the bitfenix prodigy with an i5 4670k

Personally as an Nvidia fan, I would get the 780.
However the 290 is $75 cheaper than the 780 and should perform around its level, making it the better choice at the moment. Especially with Mantle coming, the gap could widen dramatically.
