AMD R9 380 DOOM running at 65-72 degrees full load after about 10 minutes- Am I overreacting?

Hello.

I currently own a Sapphire R9 380 Nitro 4GB and I have never truly had overheating issues with it. The card runs great and runs things quite well. However, I'm a bit paranoid about preserving it. I'm playing the new Doom (2016) on High at 1080p and I get a pretty consistent 60 FPS. However, the game seems to make the GPU run at the temperatures above. From what I remember, my old 7790 would run at much higher temps than that, but I'm still concerned that there may be something up with the card. However, part of me is saying that since it is not throttling or anything, I am just freaking out way too much. Opinions?

I am running my fans at a persistent 60%.

Solution

GPUs are pretty much safe all the way up to 95C, though in reality long periods of time over 85C are probably not healthy. Intel Cpus should be capped around 80C, and AMD cpus even cooler then that (the way AMD and Intel measure temps are different, technically it's not that much cooler, it just "reads" cooler)

So in retrospect I am kinda just freaking out?

I just used to have overheating issues a couple months beforehand and it just has made me super paranoid.

you should be fine. If you don't like the temps, work on case airflow, or replace the gpu cooler. But it seems sorta pointless to me when it's operating inside it's safe zone right now.

Solution
Yes, compared to most Nvidea cards, AMD cards run pretty hot for the current generation.

As others have said, a custom fan curve is the way to go.

Sapphire Trix has a very quick and easy custom fan curve creator. I use it to keep my temps nice and low without too much audible noise.

I find (for my Sapphire Nitro 380X at least) at up to 60% fan speed it's still fairly quiet but nice and cool (even during Doom!)

Doom does seem to make my 380X run rather hot, but the custom fan curve has kept it in the low 60's.

You shouldn't worry about your temps if it's not going higher than 72C.
