I recently got an MSI R9 380 4G and it is not performing as well as I would like. In games like Skyrim and Fallout: New Vegas, I keep getting sudden frame rate drops and lags. With Far Cry 3 it starts off with a good frame rate around 40 fps, but then slowly goes down to around 20 fps when playing and stays there. I think that maybe it may be my motherboard or CPU that is causing the issue. I have an AMD FX 6300 with an MSI 970A-G46, the 970A-G46 is a pretty bad motherboard, so I suspect it is the culprit.

My question is, do you think getting a better 990FX AMD motherboard will fix the issue? My other option is to convert to Intel. If I am better off converting, I am thinking of getting a Devil's Canyon i5 or one of the new Skylake i5's.

SPECS :
CPU : AMD FX 6300 @ 3.50 GHz
GPU : MSI R9 380 4GB
MOTHERBOARD: MSI 970A-G46
RAM : 8GB
CPU Cooler : Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
PSU : 500 watt OCZ ModXStream
Operating System : Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit

do you monitor temps while playing? because lowering of fps like that can be due to thermal throttling or insufficient power supply

if not install something like msi afterburner and enable temp monitoring for the cpu and gpu in the OSD.

play a game and post back with max temps

could also be your psu, a minimum 550w would be recommended for your specs.

I played Skyrim for about 5 minutes and it got up to 51 at stock clock speeds.

I also played Far Cry 3 for about 5 minutes and it got up to 55 at stock clock speeds.

I figured I would be fine with my current PSU since the required PSU for this card is 500 watt. I am planning on upgrading to a better PSU in the future though.

msi can also monitor cpu temps, enable that function in the OSD

Oh, sorry, I did not see that you wanted my CPU temps as well. I don't seem to have the option to monitor my CPU temps in Afterburner, I looked and and all I see is CPU usage. So I used CoreTemp to monitor the CPU instead and it got up to 45 with Skyrim and 48 with Far Cry 3.
