AMD R9280x vs gtx 960

I run a xfx 290 in my 1080p rig and I really like it. I was playing with oc'ing it this morn and got 1160/1500 without trying, and in my opinion it's a sexy looking card, the XFX that lights up is a nice touch.

^ you're missing the point mate.
The 290/290x / gtx 970 are within 10% of each other performance wise.
At 1080p or 60htz you won't notice a difference - they'll all max skyrim with whatever mods you want to run.

People pick the 970 purely on a amd/nvidia preference and/or because of its efficiency/lower temps and the fact you can run it on a good sub 500w PSU.
This comes at a price premium over the amd cards.

The 980 isn't comparable to any of them - its the best single GPU based card around - its competitors are the 295x2 & titan (both twin GPU based cards with insane prices & power requirements)

I have 2 builds at opposite ends of the spectrum here - the 970 is in a small htpc build where low temps, noise & power requirements are a necessity.
The crossfire 280x is in a build in a big full tower case ,plenty of cooling & a big PSU in a room solely used for that PC - in that case noise, temps power don't matter to me at all.

I will say though the single 970 performance wise is only 15% or so behind that twin card setup which is a formidable achievablement by nvidia.

I'm not sure where you got they break easy I have 14 AMD cards and never had one break. Your question was 290x vs 770 not 970 or 980, so why are we clowns?

The 290x and the 970 trade blows depending on the game and the 980 is king of the hill till AMD releases the 300 series. If you are playing at 1080p 60hz a 280x will be good from what I can gather for heavily modded skyrim.

The rest of your system matters as well, what are your system specs?

If your question is "290x vs. GTX 970 for Skyrim", then the answer is pretty easy. Skyrim and all Bethesda games are significantly geared towards Nvidia hardware. Only Nvidia cards will allow you to force Ambient Occlusion on Skyrim, and with the GTX 970 you can force the high quality HBAO+ version of Ambient Occlusion. This affects the quality of shadows throughout the game and leads to more perception of depth and higher quality graphics overall. Notice, I'm not mentioning anything about FPS or performance, but instead note that the graphics quality is different. In the images below, Skyrim on AMD cards looks like the "AO: Off" image.

^ That's good but check out the link I gave earlier. I want to mod the game and I wanted to know what card would be most suitable as these mods are really resource demanding, as for the link I had shown, do you think 2GB of memory is sufficient or is 4GB the way to go?

I'll make it clear now, I am considering one of:

gtx 760 2GB
gtx 960 2GB
gtx 960 4GB
gtx 970
Radeon r9 280x
Radeon r9 290

I'm on a budget and I won't go any further than 970.

290 would be good but a 290x is cheaper then a 970 so I would go with that. We are talking a heavily modded skyrim so AMD is more then capable to run AO and hbao through mods rather then nivdia forced settings.

Saying a GTX 960 4GB can't use more than 2.2 to 2.5GB of VRAM is like saying a GTX 670 or GTX 680 can't. Rather ridiculous statement. As far as the R9 290 goes this past winter I owned an XFX Double Dissipation R9 290 for a couple months. Skyrim is one of my most played games. It performs well in general, but there are a few areas where it would stutter at my monitor's 60 FPS refresh rate. These were inside tombs and caves against walls in certain lighting. The only way I could stop it was by using an FPS limiter (like Riva Tuner Statistics Server) and setting it to 60 FPS. There's some sort of weird bug in AMD drivers on some games (like Skyrim) that cause it to shoot past 60 FPS momentarily by 1-3 FPS causing the stutter even with in game vertical sync. It did it on both my PCs with two different monitors. Some people may never notice it or care. I did. It never manifested itself on Nvidia cards. I sold it and bought a GTX 780 which runs the game perfectly in all situations.
