I was looking on the futurmark website which compares graphics cards and it said that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 was a bit better than the AMD Radeon HD 7850. Is this true or is the AMD Radeon HD 7850 better?

The thing is, i wouldn't go with a gfx card older than 2 generations, which the gtx480 is. 7850 is a very nice overclocker, you can get 1150 core very easily.Uses power equal to a hd 6850 and gives a performance of hd6950-hd6970.

or just wait for the gtx 660ti, but that's a little too late to come.

@norksinc,
as others said,gtx 480 is a bit faster then 7850.only cons are heat,power consumption,less overclocking potential(in comparison to 7850).if you can tolerate then it's good otherwise i would suggest 7850 as it's a newer card,runs cooler,quieter,overclocks better and is more 'future proof'.in the end,it's your choice.

clearly,evga gtx 480 is more 'bang for the buck' but you cannot get everything good in one package.both 7850 and 480 have their particular pros/cons.
gtx 480 pros-
-faster then a 7850.
-very stable drivers(it's nvidia LOL)
-good deal for it's price.
cons
-some people may call it outdated
-heat and power consumption.
-less overclocking potential in comparison to 7850.
-less futurproof as once it get's out of stock,i don't think they will get restocked.

would rather plump for the 7870
Pros: Less power, less heat, never architecture - more future proof;
Cons: Not as much raw power as the 480.

Though if overclocking is your deal, factor in the cooling solutions, before you do a price comparo. The 480 might not win so clearly on price then if you need to spend 30-40 $ on the cooling, and the psu issues to boot :)

irrelevant!

Its not like the GTX 480 is going to get a performance boost that will saturate PCIe 2.0 channels. The GTX 480 is not going to change.

++ NVidia's drivers are not that much better than AMDs. My GTX 560Ti has driver crashes every-time I play flash videos.

One question: Are you planning to only use the computer for Video Games, or are you also planning to use the computer for 3D design, and/or content creation as well as gaming? The GTX 480 is a BEAST for content creation/compute tools as well as gaming. The Radeon 7800 series is also good, but not as good as the GTX 480.

++ another thing to consider - in colder climates you might not mind having a graphics card that runs hot.

:ouch: :ouch: :ouch: :ouch: :ouch:
holy crap dude!you are saying amd has better drivers then nvidia?
not trying to be a fanboy but you sound like a noob!
nvidia has way better drivers support then amd and that's for sure :sarcastic:

recon-uk leaves in UK as he said earlier.he is also using gelid aftermarket coolers for 480s.it seems to me that BF3 is slightly optimized for nvidia but not mote then crysis 2 :p

well about TS do you live in a cold country? because if you live in places that are hot,
imo i have 2 gtx480 on my shelf it runs great on stock, not overclocking it as heat is not that great specially right now in the summer (28c room temp this is with 2 aircons at max and 2 fans at speed number 3) but well it get's really cold at night so no problem during night time but yeah if you have room temp somewhere around there then you might need to consider 7850 or something, but I say 480 are still a beast of a card can still play lot's of games in high settings with great fps, if you live in really cold places then a 480 is not that much of a problem, but if you live in some place that has 150c room temp (lol) then either gpu is not a great choice ^_^

(actually yesterday it was raining so it was king of cool but today it's freaking hot TT__TT)

I must chime in here.I went from 7950/7970 crossfire to gtx 480 sli like recon has said.Bottom line there really is no competition price performance.How could anyone pass up a card for under $250 that can easily beat a gtx 580 with a slight bump in clocks?Another selling point for me is the fact that crossfire flatout sucks.I had 2 beastley cards and one was going to waste in most games but my sli 480's scale in every game ive tried.I was also getting a smoother gaming experience with one gtx 480 over one 7970(drivers im thinking)I am still baffled what new tech has to do with anything or cards a few generations old?I care about cards pushing my fps i dont care about all this so called new tech that you dont even notice anyways.

@recon

totally agree with you actually makes me wish I live there in the UK or US or canada at least it's cold there and snows too, the only snow I see raining here are fake snow made from Ice me and my friends trow around back then when I was in highschool.

@TS if your gearing at something like this
'42.31 pesos to 1$ us dollar" (didn't notice calculation changed until I check just now)

Sapphire hd 7850 = 10700=252.89$
http://www.tipidpc.com/viewitem.php?iid=16577694

bnew Inno3d GTX 480 1536mb DDR5 384bit regular price
regular price 14,499 = 342.68$ (regular price LOL)
limited offer april 26 to 30@ 11k = 259.98$ (this one doesn't count right now)
limited offer may 1 to 15 12.5k = 295.43$(right now since it's still may you get this price)
http://www.tipidpc.com/viewitem.php?iid=16688586

@TS
if the prices are similar to what I have above then a 7850 is a no brainer. seeing as it's also inno3d (had 4 experience with them and all of those 4 went bad)

don't know but 4 inno3d card I bought all from the gtx family all went bad after 7 months first 1 card then so on so fort.

well not sure about all but gainward and palit doesn't use same as those in nvidia to save cost. at least that's what they say. or something along the line above

but if he lives in country where he doesn't make use of evga's step up imo I would say asus/msi/gigabyte/sapphire/zotac
