Hi everyone.

I have an Alienware x51 R2 (completely stock) which comes with an AMD Radeon R9 270. While I'm playing games like Rocket League my GPU temperature goes up to 85°C with the fan running at about 38%.

I've always used MSI afterburner custom fan profiles and maintined my temperature at about 68 - 70°C, but it's quite noisy (fan at about 55%)

I want to know if 85°C is safe for my specific GPU and if it's safe to use the auto fan setting even with those temperatures? Will my GPU be okay? Or should I use my custom fan settings?

Thanks.

That temperature is on the warm side but still safe, I think you're right to be using Afterburner to tame the heat, try aiming at 80C under load by tweaking the fan curve in Afterburner.
If the system is getting on a bit a little TLC may be in order as well.
Clean out the GPU cooler and fans, use cotton buds to remove the dust build up on the fan blades but be careful, they're notoriously fragile, and be sure to remove any build up from both sides of the blades or they'll become unbalanced.
How to clean the cooler varies depending on the exact design your card uses but the best way is to strip the cooler assembly off the card for better access, blow it through using a can of 'compressed air' then reassemble using new thermal paste.

If you're unsure about anything, feel free to ask for further guidance or have a quick Google on the subject before proceeding.
As an old mechanic once told me during my apprenticeship: "If you don't know what you're doing, leave it the f*** alone, or ask!"
