The 7900 GRE seems to be noticeably faster than a 4070 in rasterization and about on par with it for raytracing and the GRE comes with 33% more RAM for $50 more. If the price drops down to $549 it'd be a solid deal in my mind.

JFC! AMD with their terrible naming, would it kill them to call the cards RX 7900xt, RX 7900 and RX7800xt?
Instead we're looking a 3 versions of 7900s with greatly varying performance. So stupid.

From what I can tell it's a 4070Ti/6950XT lvl card.. it's a solid buy at $599 with 16GB, I mean anyone can get the 6950XT for that already so.

Now my question is.. if this "7900GRE" is at 6950XT lvl.. and not so far off a 4070... then the 7800XT will be competing against what exactly? AMD did such a mess with names this gen I really can't understand.

I decided to call those cards for what they really are on my expectations.. the "7900XTX" is IMO the 7800XT, the "7900XT" is the 7800, and now this "7900GRE" is the 7700XT lol.
It's right there up against the "4070Ti" which is IMO the real 4070, losing to it just like the 3070 won against the 6700XT last gen.

The "RTX 4070 12GB" IMO should have been the 4060 12GB and apparently the card that will compete against it will be the "7800XT" then? Whatever they name it I will call it the 7600XT. So there you have it..

4070Ti12GB($800)/7900 20GB($700)
4080 16GB($1100)/7900 24GB($900)

Looking at this "graph".. I really think this 7900GRE should have been the 6800XT 16GB at $500.. but oh well.. it will get there eventually

The first news I saw of this did mention it may be an Asia market only SKU. And the box art I have seen is in Chinese. But those marketing slides look to be in English...

Since it's a limited release, probably these are partially defective 7900XT GPUs. AMD may be recouping their bad yield parts.

Not related to the article.. just my two cents, this gen is easily skipable besides the RTX 4080/4090 and the 7900XT/XTX

I dont mind buying used GPUs, I actually prefer now that prices are so inflated, and this is the scenario I see for maxed out 60fps

1080p= RTX3060/6600XT (~$200)
1440p= RTX3070/6700XT (~$300)
2560p=RTX3080/6800XT (~$400)

The upper cards this gen are useful only if you want more more like 120fps native at4K, then you go for a.4090 ($1600) or 120+fps at 1440p, then you go 7900XT ($700).. anything else is really, why bother

Some important points which many actually missed or overlooked.

What's new and different about this "Navi 31" package found in the RX 7900 GRE SKU is that it is visibly smaller in size than the one powering the RX 7900 XT/XTX cards. It is also a SQUARE shaped package.

The larger Navi 31 package is rectangular in shape.

So this also appears to be a new PCB entirely, and based on this, it's unlikely AMD will use this new silicon only for the GRE SKU. It might have bigger plans for this particular silicon/PCB, most likely for the rumored Radeon RX 7700/7800 XT, and a global launch of these SKUs, imo.

There seems to be pins for only a 256-bit wide memory bus.

Also, this is a HYBRID NAVI 31/32 design/Navi 31 XL, indicating that 2 out of 6 Infinity Cache dies/MCDs are either disabled or are "dummies". After all the 5 nm GCD is still surrounded by six 6 nm MCDs (7900 XT features 10 ICs).

There were rumors of a hybrid Navi 31/32 design before in the works, so this might end up either with the RX 7800 XT, or 7700 XT SKU. Of course nothing is set on stone.

I still think this is the Navi 31 XL PCB though, which will be used for other GPUs to fill the in-between gap.

• It's the year of the rabbit in Chinese calendar.

All in all, that name is for the Chinese market. They did a similar thing with the "RX 590 Golden Mouse Edition" during the year of the rat.

And naming it "mouse" instead of calling it .....The "RX 590 Golden Rat Edition" was definitely better for western customers' ears.....

Reviews for the 7800xt are popping up now with benchmarks.... Looks like this runs neck and neck with it in games, so they better not sell it for $650 while the 7800xt is at $500, or it's DOA.

Waiting for this chip to make it to a mobile version. With its low power consumption, it could do well there.... It doesn't make much sense as a desktop model, with virtually the same performance as the 7800xt for more money.
