Hey there!

So I am replacing a dead graphics card and am planning to get the amd rx 470.

Problem is, is that I cannot decide what cpu to get and if my motherboard is okay or if that also needs to be replaced.
I am still not the best with understanding everything (did a lot of research though).

My current motherboard is a Gigabyte 970A-DS3P (hope that makes sense).

I heard the amd fx 8350 or the i5 6300/6500 are good choices but I would like to stick to amd if my current motherboard will work with it.

Thanks!

So the Gigabyte 970A-DS3P has an AM3/AM3+ socket and the 8350 fits in there. So that's an upgrade path of cpu only
The i5 6500 (as well as the i3 6300) does not fit in an AM3 socket, so that requires a motherboard upgrade as well.

The 8350 is a mid tier, at best, choice. It still makes this list. You can see it gets beat by the i3 6100, so the 6300 will be above there and the 6500 is above there again.
Then again, it has some great overclocking potential and if handled correctly should place above any skylake i3.

Whether you should go for a 8350 or switch to intel . . . . that's dependent on a bunch of stuff.
1. what is your current CPU?
2. [strike]what is your budget?[/strike] $600, try and read, Maarsch
3. what do you plan to do with this build?

Which processor do you have right now? If it is a FX6300- best way would be to overclock it. FX8320 with OC might be too much for the motherboard, and faster thread clock on OC FX6300 is more beneficial than more cores on FX83xx. Cheaper as well- just a price of cooler and FX6300 (if you don't have it already)- could be $100 or so.
Going Intel, on the other hand, would be much more expensive. In that case, it makes sense to go i5 or higher, different motherboard, same RAM if you go for Haswell generation CPU, but new DDR4 RAM as well if buying latest and further upgradable Sky Lake. I would advise better going with AMD for now, and if you want to spend more money- to get a freesync monitor instead, which will make visual experience better, and even low frame rates feel fluid.
But I'll just add this: going Intel still makes sense if you play games competitively, and need very high fps on lower visual quality, and not so much visual pleasure of playing games.

Thanks for the answers so far!

I currently have a AMD FX(tm)-4130 Quad-Core Processor which is soooo bad for me q_q.
I plan to game a lot. Currently small games like gw2 and sims 4. I would like to play fallout 4 but im sure I won't be able to.

If you guys(or gals) think going intel would be best than do you think it would be possible to buy a new processor, motherboard, and the rx 470 while under $600 and still better than the fx 8350?

FYI I am in Canada and prices are a bit higher here. I could not find the i5 6600k for a decent price, so getting that with a rx 470 and a new motherboard for under $600 might not be possible according to my research, which hurts :c

You can customise it a bit, this is just a basic build based off of what you said.

It is a bit over your budget, but only by a little.

Edit, you can always get a 3GB GTX 1060 for a similar price: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/7bL7YJ/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1060-3gb-windforce-oc-video-card-gv-n1060wf2oc-3gd

This would be ~$670 with 2x4GB DDR4.
I would advise to just get and overclock FX6300 for now- most likely, FX4300 seemed slow because of the graphic card. Best try it with the RX470, and then decide if you need upgrade to i5 for sure.
As for the Fallout4- it should run with the RX470 well. It also likes memory bandwidth a lot- make sure you run your RAM at highest clock possible, and in dual channel.

Oh yeah, forgot about the RAM, silly me...
Could always downgrade to a H81 and a 4590, such as this:

The 4590 is still an incredible processor, could also be upgraded to a 4690 for an extra $30, and you can reuse your current RAM I believe.

Is the FX 6300 worse than the 8350? And also, should I still upgrade my motherboard if I get an amd processor? If I need to push it a bit beyond $600 I can try for $650. I really want the best I can push for gaming with this (I am sure it wont be too good but still 😀).

Shoot! I didn't mean to choose this as the solution yet lol! I just wanted to respond and ask if I can get everything if I push my budget to $650.
