If AMD makes a 16 core TR 2 they would be just as stupid as Intel when they made a 4 core HEDT CPU that was devastated by mainstream quad cores.
...
Nope, that wouldn't be the same at all because you could get double the core count on mainstream at the time Intel was offering quad HEDT --- you can't get a 32core mainstream consumer chip at this time. (not that 8 core HEDT made a lot sense either -- it did for a few I guess)
Also there's platform advantages for wanting a 16 core TR over a 16 core mainstream chip that would have it make sense for some at the same core count. But AMD has the choice with the TR platform to do anything from 16 to 64 cores - tons of room for any decisions in there regarding core counts. With Intel only getting to 10 on mainstream any time soon, 18 on HEDT (Maybe they could pull a 28 core xeon down to HEDT), AMD is going to have free reign in this area for a while, granted they don't wait a year to get zen2 TR out.
