I've been looking for good processors to upgrade my gaming pc with and i decided to go with a Ryzen processor. I heard about AMD processors needing/ performing better with more ram or ram with higher speeds.

Is this true? And is there any ram that doesn't cost £140 for 16gb or have prices always been this high?

Ryzen is particularly finicky about memory. It is true that it has gotten by better with the newer chipsets, B450 and X470, than with early Ryzen chipset motherboards, but it is still picky especially when it comes to trying to get it to run at speeds of 3000mhz or higher. Not only that, but it is furthermore quite selective about which ICs (Memory chips) are used on the memory modules with a clear preference for modules using Samsung B-die ICs which is generally what makes selecting memory for Ryzen more expensive.

Ryzen is also a lot more responsive with fast memory, in the 3000-3400mhz range, due to the design of it's infinity fabric memory architecture.

Those are the particulars of that. It has however gotten better through...
Higher RAM speeds do improve performance with Ryzen CPUs, this is a fact.

RAM is fairly expensive at the moment. There was a shortage of memory chips which drove the prices up. If you wait a bit, prices may lower, but right now RAM will cost a significant part of your budget when building a new PC.

Those are the particulars of that. It has however gotten better through improvements from BIOS/UEFI firmware updates and better compatibility at the hardware level from the newer chipsets. I wouldn't even remotely consider going with an older chipset board like B350 or X370 at this late stage of the game.

While there is a good chance that any decent quality memory will run, I'd recommend sticking to modules that have been user verified as having been found to work on Ryzen and those can be found here:

or you can use the B-die finder to identify which modules definitely use Samsung B-die ICs as those are the most likely to have the best compatibility with Ryzen platforms, although other non-B-die modules may definitely be capable of running in a Ryzen system as well.

Oh that's unfortunate because i made a parts list which had the strix B350- F . I'm actually upgrading my current pc which i bought prebuilt. The current processor is an AMD A8-7650K and it performs really bad in almost all games.

What motherboard with the AM4 socket would you suggest under £150, preferably one that comes with a cooler. Also, I won't be overclocking, if that helps.

If you're not overclocking, the stock cooler that comes with new Ryzen CPUs should be more than enough for you. So I'd say, don't worry about cooling if you're not overclocking.

Okay so what motherboards do you suggest I look at?

It's very hard to recommend a specific motherboard. The right one depends greatly on whta you are going to do with it, and what features you need or want. I'd say to look through PCPartPicker's motherboard list, and check which ones fit your budget. Then think about what features you want, and check which motherboards offer them.

Otherwise, you can say whihch features you're looking for, and we can help you choose. However, you are the only one who can make the final decision, so please do keep that in mind.

Motherboards don't come with coolers, ever. CPUs SOMETIMES come with coolers, depending on the model.

For that price, I'd probably be looking at this board.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Motherboard: Asus - TUF B450-PLUS GAMING ATX AM4 Motherboard (£105.46 @ Scan.co.uk)
Total: £105.46
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Ok I'd prefer if someone here could give me suggestions and then I'll take that into consideration.

I'll be primarily using the computer for gaming aswell as internet browsing and school work. The games i normally play include AAAs such as Black Ops 4 and Just Cause 4. I won't be overclocking the CPU anytime soon and i dont need any of the premium features such as M.2 compatibility and USB Type C. As someone else earlier said though, the Strix B350- F isn't a very good mobo for the Ryzen 7 1800X.
The memory that I will probably be going for is 16GB DDR4 3000MHz from Corsair. I have a GTX 1080(I don't know if that really matters for picking out a motherboard but just in case).
Also, the maximum I would like to spend on the mobo is £150/160.

Thanks.

Oh sorry I got confused between the CPU that i had in mind. And thanks for the suggestion on the motherboard. I'll be sure to look at this one.

Oh yes you did. Sorry i forgot to edit that after i saw your suggestion. Thanks
