AMD S1 CPU in S2 socket?

What's the cross compatibility among AMD S1, S2, and S3 CPUs? I don't expect the earlier sockets to support the newer CPUs, but will the newer sockets support the older CPUs?

Or is it like the three or four generations of mobile Intel CPUs that all share the same 478/479 pin socket but are mutually incompatible?

AM2 is compatible with AM3 CPUs, if there's a BIOS update for them. AM2+ is compatible with AM3 CPUs. AM3 can be compatible with the AM3+ Bulldozer/Zambezi and Vishera CPUs.

S1 CPUs fit into S2 sockets. The sockets are physically the same. But what about electrically?
