wanting to build an amd system. I hear the athlon 64's are trouble as of yet. any good ideas on a mobo to start with? was thinking of 400mhz fsb system.

currently am using a gigabyte ga-7va 333fsb 8Xagp, but would like to pass that system along to a family member in need of a newer system.

any help is much appreciated

If you want a 400fsb system, then you would be happy as a clam with a NForce2 Ultra 400 Mobo and a XP2500+ Processor(333fsb).

Now if you want to spend the extra $130, then you could get a XP3200+ Processor(400fsb) and put that in it. The 2500+ overclocked some, would probably make you happy for quite awhile for only ~$90 Retail. Then someday when the 3200+ comes down in price you could upgrade to that.

All depends on your wallet. I think you would be better off overclocking the 2500+ some and spending the extra $130 on another 512MB of dual channel memory. So if you were planning on putting 512MB in already, you could buy 2x512MB of dual channel.

Up to you :)

Have a look at the Abit NF7-S. It's got the 400 FSB, AGP/PCI locks, good for OC'ing and has many features (ex. soundstorm, lan etc). Get yourself some good PC 3200 or better ram, then OC the Barton by raising the FSB, Turns the 2500+ into 3200+ cpu.

XP 2000+
MSI KT3 ULTRA-2 KT333
Maxtor 60GB ATA 133 7200RPM
512MB PC2700
9600 Pro
Win98SE

Splendid
The problem with the a64 is the mobo. It just doesn't perform that well. Just the same, it still kicks butt over any xp or northwood chip. Maybe it will be worth it to upgrade the mobo in a year or so, but for high performance go A64.

I second endyen,
Maybe the MB are not up to par but the A64 is one hell of a CPU. So even if you had to upgrade your MB a year from now you will still be ahead of the game.

Beam me up Scotty.
