I bought an AMD 1800XP processor. It came with a heat sink with thermal tape attached. Everywhere I look they say don't use thermal tape. Then why does AMD want you to use it? If I don't overclock and have 2 intake fans and 1 exhuast fan is that enough? Would there be any problem using the tape?

and if you leave the tape on, you get to keep the nifty AMD warranty...because you didnt alter it. and that is one of the main reasons to buy a retail CPU...for the warranty.

You've gotta leave that POS tape on? I'm planning to get a xp1800 soon and i'll definitely be using AC3. Is it a waste of my money to get a retail then? I should just get OEM? Will using the AC3 instead violate a 30 day OEM warranty?

you only violate the warantee if you take the tape off the retail heatsink (the one that came with the chip in the same box. any after market hsf is not covered in the retail warantee.

you shot who in the what now?

yeah, and if something happens, they will look at the cpu, and see that there is nothing on it, and then look at the tape on the heatsink, and see that it was never mounted, and then get suspicious...
but i dunno.
you might be able to fake them out....hehe...just put it on the cpu for a while...i dunno...they might be able to tell...
if you are going to use an aftermarket heatsink, why not just buy the OEM cpu, and if you already have the CPU, then dont worry about it....because unless you mess up, they arent going to cover anything but manufacturer defects...like dead processors...or the likes...
if you need to have more cooling...then you either wont need the warranty, or you dont care...
at least that is the way i think of it....sorry if people disagree... 😱 im just crazy
