Its a good deal, if only the motherboard didnt cost as much, and then you still have to get a cooler. That being said, its still cheaper than a 9900k with a decent board and cooler, and it gives you better options in the future.

One problem with "for the future" is that the $300+ motherboard you buy for ThreadRipper today won't have the necessary repeater chips to support PCIe 4.0 much beyond the first slot and you'll need another $300+ motherboard if that matters to you. May as well just get a Ryzen 2700(X) instead of a TR 1900X unless you really need quad-channel memory or 20+ PCIe 3.0 lanes immediately. AMD needs to get rid of its inventory fast since Ryzen 3000 will destroy most of the potential market for lower-end TR1xxx-2xxx parts.
