AMD vs. Intel Laptops

Im currently shopping for a new laptop for "school," but ultimately its going to be primarily used for gaming. The answer to my dilema here has become a little more complicated for me, since the Athlon 64 3200+ has been introduced in laptops. Im actually looking to purchase a system in the next couple days, and have a couple questions that I hope someone can set me straight with!

The CPU's for my laptop im looking at are either the P4 3.4ghz (not going for EE), or the AMD64 3200+. (and as stated, gaming is of most importance here).

Also, is there a difference between the 64's they have in desktops and laptops? It seems its always labeled in the laptop version as AMD 64 Mobile. As far as I know, the only difference is that it runs cooler as a Mobile?

Ahh, and one more thing that I have not been able to find any information on. Is the Radeon mobile 9700 128mb version clocked faster, and outperform the 256mb version?

I don't think there is a mobile 9700 with 256mb of memory though I could be wrong. The speeds of the mobile 9700 differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Ati has certain criteria for it to be a 9700 and some manufacturers choose to choose the lowest clock speed they can get away with (for power consumption) and others will run it pretty much as fast as it can go. If there is a 256mb 9700 it will run slower than the 128mb version because more memory = more money so it is balanced out by using slower memory. Besides for that, the 9700 will never utilize 256mb of memory.

As far as the differences from mobile 64's from regular 64's I don't think their really is any except for the multiplier being unlocked for their power saving features and a slightly different packaging.

Are their any specific laptops that your looking at? The two processors you're looking at will run about even in games. It's going to come down to personal taste.

For gaming, those two chips are very close. I would go Amd and hope the special purpose registers add something for 64 bit. The Amd would be cooler, and last a few minutes longer on battery. What would be more important is things like screen, graphics card, and hard-drive speed. If all else is equal, the A64 is the better deal.

If you need a laptop, get a lower power CPU that will produce far less heat, consume less battery power, and be much more portable. If you need more CPU power, get a desktop.

Either CPU would make a laptop essentially a small, crappy desktop PC.

1gb of ram.
Dual 80 gig hard drives 5200rpms

One thing I would like to tell you buy the 12 cell batterys And stay away from Prescott chips for you have to use a 12 cell battery. So I m guessing It would only last a hour.

P4 EE, video card with 256MB(second 128MB of which does nothing but wastepower, how much depends on ATI's power saving, haven't looked into for a while), gig of ram, dual hard drives. SO yeah, you're gonna get about 15 minutes of battery life.

Hope your only planning on using it as a "desktop replacement" cause you will need to carry a car battery around with you if you wana use it as a notebook!

I said I could be wrong. That system looks like it would last 10 minutes off the batteries. I still stand by on what I said that the extra 128 mb of graphics memory is a complete waste in the 9700.

DTR laptops are needed by some for mobility that a regular desktop can't give. They are meant to be used plugged in.
