AMD vs Intel??

i have a fx 8350 which is 4ghz and wondered what intel i7 it is comparable to? is it something around 3,1 or 3,8ghz? always thought higher clock is better, until not long ago i read that intels clockes are stronger per ghz

I dont really think that old fx CPU is comparable to any I7. The I7 is just much stronger, specially the newer ones.
It is not even comparable to a new I3.

It's probably along the lines of an Intel Core I7-920/2700K. Any current Core I7 processor would easily out-perform the FX 8350.

Probably a first gen i7 like i7 950 would be pretty close. From what I remember 2nd gen i7's like the i7 2600 beat out the FX cpu's pretty consistently in most tasks especially gaming.

Higher clock speed is better when talking about the same cpu or cpu's of similar architectures. But when comparing an intel and AMD FX cpu, clock speeds alone will not tell you which cpu will perform better for your purposes.

Amd IPC was @66% of 3rd Gen Intel. That's only viable if you consider that a new Ryzen is approaching 50% IPC gain over FX, so a new Ryzen is @ 6th Gen Intel in ability. ±.

Clocks are how fast a cpu thinks. IPC is how fast a cpu actually spits out an answer after listening to the question. The higher the clock, the faster the thought process, but if IPC is lacking, it's like waiting on an answer from someone with a stutter.

🙁 well, that was a bummer lol. i bought my pc for 400$ with a terrible gpu and thought i should buy it because it was 4ghz then i could just buy a better gpu and have a beast... now i have gtx 960, is the cpu or gpu the weakest point? ( also have 2x 4GB 1600ram)

Depends on what you are after, but realistically the 960 is almost identical to a gtx1050 in performance so it's going to be ok for 1080p in many games, medium-high settings, suffer in some at anything more than medium, but on simpler games will still hit ultra and get decent fps.

4GHz is chump change for an 8350, most of which can easily hit 4.5GHz+ with appropriate cooling. And for some of today's games, you'll pretty much need that OC to get acceptable fps. There is no viable upgrade for an FX 8350, it's arguably the best FX cpu amd produced. You'd need to replace the cpu, mobo, and probably ram to upgrade.

5 years ago, that would have been a decent setup, but today's Ryzen are @40-50% stronger per clock, and Intel has another @5-10% beyond that.

For $400 you got barely adequate, beast would require an extra $1k.
