Just finished building a computer for the first time, after hours of messing around because it wouldn't boot, I finally got it to.. but in my MSI BIOS it's telling me the temperate is 75 Celsius? There's no way it should be this high is there

Solution

I'm using an MSI 990FXA-GD65, also my CPU CVORE VOLTAGE: 1.370 V
DRAM VOLTAGE: 1.568

I didn't put thermal paste on my heatsink... could this be the issue?

EDIT: I downloaded the application CORETEMP, and it's telling me my temperature is only at 26C? with the highest being 41C

If reseating the heatsink doesn't solve the problem, check your BIOS. Manually ensure that your voltages are at auto or below 1.4V if you aren't over the stock 4.0 Ghz.

The first time I built a computer, some years ago, I had ...forgotten to install the CPU's fan to the three pin PWM on the motherboard - The heatsink was cooling without the dissipation of heat by the fan.

What motherboard are you using?

it wont shutdown at 75c in most cases, I heard that these cpus will shutdown towards the 100c range even though they are only rated to go to 62c.

I would re-seat your heatsink and check all your bios settings to make sure your voltage and cpu clock arent reading wrong and are through the roof

Have you tried CPUID's HW Monitor? The monitoring programs are sort of finicky in that they don't always accurately display temperatures, but they're usually pretty good and HW Monitor is a good one.

Are you still having problems with not booting?
