This would be a major upgrade from the currently available AMD Threadripper Pro 5000WX-series CPUs that power high-end desktop workstations from companies like Dell, HP, and Lenovo, but would likely lead to the chips again not landing in the hands of enthusiasts due to professional-class (i.e., eyewatering) pricing.

You say that, but you can get a System76 Thelio Mega with:

5995WX (64C/128T)
256GB DDR4-3200
1TB NVMe 4.0
RTX 4090 24GB

For $12,062, or $10,267 without the 4090.

Yes it's expensive, and before 2020 you could get a decent used car for that price, but what "enthusiast" would need a system with this hardware (specifically 64 cores and 8 memory channels) and not be a professional or prosumer, given that "regular" desktop hardware from AMD (the 7950X/X3D) and MSI (MEG X670E ACE) gives you 16C/32T and 3 simultaneously usable PCIe 5 slots (x8/x8/x4) for $1400.
