Question AMI motherboard does not recognize M.2 drive, cannot install OS from usb ?

Hi,

I have an AMI bios motherboard - h310 micro atx - from amazon (not even sure what manufacturer... amazon link here). i5-9600k with 32 gb ddr4 ram. m.2 drive and no other hdd or sdd. I want to install windows via usb boot drive, but I cannot get into bios settings to select boot priority when the m.2 drive is installed in the slot (only one slot). when I remove it from the mobo, the computer will post and enter bios, or go straight to the windows setup when the usb is plugged in. I am not sure if I have to flash bios and update it to recognize the m2 drive, or if there is another way to get to bios with the m.2 drive installed.

Bios version: 360bv011

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Your board's Amazon link shows it to be non branded which leads me to think that you're having a compatibility issue due to the BIOS. Might want to try and drop the SSD on another motherboard and see if it works.

Did the board come with a stand off for the M.2 drive? Can you pass on an image of the drive installed on your board? Take the picture at an angle.

What exactly is happening when the m.2 is installed? Does the boot freeze or does it do something, reaches some point in the boot?
If it freezes it's like lutfij said the drive could be short circuiting something and cause freezes.
If it does stuff then it's a bios setting or a driver issue, sometimes you have to incorporate a driver into the windows installation so it recognises the m.2.

Thanks all for the responses. I appreciate the time. I tried installing a Samsung 870 EVO SSD into the sata port 0 and was able to post and install windows on that drive. Does that mean that the NVME m.2 drive was not compatible with the BIOS version? Is there any way to update the BIOS on these generic boards? probably should have bought a better quality one from a known manufacturer..

M.2 nvme is a Crucial 500GB P3 M.2 2280

The issue I am running into now is trying to connect to the internet after updating drivers and windows 10. I tried using Driver Easy to update the LAN driver but then I lose connection. could this be an issue with the BIOS version? Current version for this AMI board is 360BV011. does AMI have a BIOS driver update page?

Thanks in advance for your assistance. I can provide more information if needed.

yes, there is a stand installed on the board. but i am thinking it was not compatible with the BIOS as you suggested. I was able to install windows on an extra SSD that I had lying around.
