I want to build a new PC to replace my 2011-2012 one which is:

Random case, power supply and Intel motherboard
2x4 GB 1600 DDR3 basic Ram
I7 2600 (non K)
GT 520 GPU

I know I'll keep the i7, maybe the Ram and get rid of the rest, but I'm not sure about which Mb, case (doesn't it even Matter?) or power supply.
as for the GPU I'll wait for pascal release and see, even if they weren't that good of an idea I'll probably still make use of a 900 series price drop (same applies for Android GPUs)

I'll also consider an aftermarket fan if over clocking stayed possible

Budget: 400-500$

Solution
Z77 Board from msi or gigabyte, depends which you can get. New boards are very expensive. You should get a good used one.

Have a look at the psu tier list in this forum for a psu. Any Tier 1 and 2 with at least 550W should be fine.

Overclocking with this CPU doesn't make sense.

Thanks, I'll probably look for a used one

Why?, non K can be overclocked with no problem unless they're skylake... I don't get your point
