An issue with pc's display or graphics card.

So i've been having an issue with my pc lately. The screen would just turn black but the pc was still on and the green lights on the monitor were still shining , it would go back to normal after a while. Today i was using my pc (a monitor connected to a laptop via vga cable) and the screen started to get dimm fast and then the black screen again. But this time it doesn't get back to normal again. So my question is - is it my graphics card dying or the screen itself? I reapplied thermal paste to cpu and gpu yesterday, maybe that is important.

When it happens, try pressing the Menu button on your display. If the displays built in menu is not displaying/screen still dark then its a display issue.
