Hello.

I have recentely purchased a Sony Hi8 HandyCam CCD-TR728E (PAL). Everything is fine and dandy, but now I must find out how to transfer tmy film onto my laptop.

There is no firewire for sure. These are the following ports in the camera:

DC IN
S Video Out
A/V Out
RFU DC Out

That's it, I've searched everywhere, read the manual. Everything about transfering the picture so you can watch it on the TV (Red, Yellow wire), but nothing about the computer.

I really, really need to get this onto computer. Can anyone help me?

Thanks,

Curse.

Options (best to worst):

Hook up red/yellow to your computer, will need to buy converter, unless you already have these red/yellow ports on your computer, in which case, you can just use the cord that came with your camera (one did right?)
Hook up s-video to your computer, you will need to buy a cord.

If your computer has USB2.0 interface, get an external USB2.0 capture box that will allow to input digital video signal in your computer.

You then be able to plug the A/V out to the A/V in of the capture box.

it is made by ADS Tech, says video express on it...not sure of exact model...works very well, my familly's old video look great (as a 15 year old video can look). I put them on dvd's to enjoy on tv. The converter was about 50-60 bucks.

Actually, went to their website and it is up in the top right corner (pic). Hope this helps.

You'll also need software to capture, edit, and burn video. Easy Media Creator 8 is a pretty good all in one program, i.e., photo editor, video capture, burning and editiing, music, etc. For just video I use Pinnacle Studeo and it works well. Unless you have a dual processor probably best not to do anything else when your capturing and burning, both of which take a reall long time. Generally I do the rendering and burning over night. Capturing analogue you have to be around because unlike a Digital camcorder, analogue won't automatically stop. vcdhelp.com is a forum devoted to video stuff and it's pretty pretty good for reviews, help, etc. When it comes to reviews and opions re products, good idea to check other sites as well. People on this site tend towards high end software and hardware. I'm using Datavdeo DAC 100 capture box but it kind of priceybut have never had a problem capturing, i.e., no audio/video sync problems or any other problems for that matter.

neither have I, and I have done many videos with it.

that is what you need, right pat?

one note: I just use movie maker to put videos on my computer (which works great), instead of the program that came with it.

This is random, but I really like movie maker for basic editing.

I'm looking for something to do some quick capture job on my laptop. I have another computer that I use for serious editing job.

That box should do good, I'll keep that in mind if I ever make the move.

As far as I know, you always have to use an external box or video card that allows capturing when using an analogue camera, so what ever your using on the PC to capture should work with the laptop unless it's your video card. Thnk "quick capture" is an oxymoron. Finally able to use oxymoron in a meaningful sentence.

no.......if he has a really nice desktop for editing, it probably has a mobo with red, yellow, white input already, therefore, he does not need a box for it.

Thought the box was needed to convert from analogue to digital or is thas what the software does?
