I have always avoided WMP like the plague. Foobar2000 is still being maintained and does a great job at ripping audio CDs and is still a great media player after all these years.

Exact Audio Copy (EAC) is also an option and checks against a database to make sure your rip is accurate. Especially handy for older CDs that might have some scuffs or scratches.

It's another aspect where Japan's Galapagos Syndrome comes to play, sales of physical media go still pretty strong there. I've read that apparently the inclusion of tickets for handshake events with popular singers/voice actress/actors plays a big role in their continued popularity.

Optical disks still have a place for some. However, not the streaming generation. Both will do. Streaming when in a hurry.
I still have Laserdisk equipment (NTSC) from when my kids were single digits. Now both are in their 40's.
I just Rip my CD's then put a bunch of music in the FLAC lossless format on flash drives. I play what I want, where I want and when I want, instantly.
BTW, 4k blu-ray is the lick!
