After literally years of wanting to build a MAME cab, I came home tonight
with my latest purchase. A very tidy and solid Atari system 1 cabinet.
Still has marquee glass, light, harness for Roadblasters, transformer and
coin door. The icing on the cake? The very friendly and accomodating
seller not only brought it over in his truck but after I told him how
much I liked Roadblasters, he threw in a working and complete Roadblasters
CP! *adds optipac to shopping list* Not bad for fifty bucks eh? I feel
like a kid at xmas..heh

Good score! And an Atari System 1 cab is great for MAME, especially with
the front access door (I miss my MAMEframe...sniff...)

Yeah after finding out it was available your site was the first port of
call :) That front door is great - in fact it's the only thing missing
from the cabinet. Dead easy to make a new one though Am I right in
thinking it has a lip on it that fits into the groove at the bottom and
locks at the top?

Now I just need to sweet talk someone with a sheet metal brake into
bending up a new CP for me. I'm going to have to put together a list of
all the games that use a 180 degree wheel and no more than two buttons.
Interchangeable CP? I think so :) the CP clips on there real easy too
thanks to that front door again.

Yup - a lip on the bottom that fits into the groove, and a standard
arcade lock at top. I added a small handle near the top to make it
easier to pull open.

You might want to check out Steve Lilley-Hopkin's System 1 repro cab
(he's the author of MAMEwah) - I don't know if he's done his multiple CP
panels yet, but he's designed it for that.

At least you got the steering wheel. I got the front door, but no
controls, just the foot pedal.

And I got no pedal! LOL

I'll take a look at Steve's system. If necessary I'll email him and make a
nuisance of myself. I'm good at that! I'll be interested to see what
approach he's taking. What I DON'T want to do is mess with the line of the
cab by bolting a huge aircraft-carrier-flightdeck control panel on the
front. I have a fairly tight space for the cab and it would be awkward
anyway.

Was hooking up the speakers a straightforward cabling thing and did it
make a big difference in the sound? I'd like to use the speakers that are
in there if I can.

One last slightly interesting point is that I found a paper label inside
that indicates that it was a Marble Madness at some point.

If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't have bolted on a SlikStik. It
was my first cab and all, though, so I took an "all-in-one" approach
instead of a swappable panel (which is what the System 1 cab is
perfectly designed for)

> Was hooking up the speakers a straightforward cabling thing and did it

I used the existing speakers. Check out my MAMEframe pages for some
photos, but basically I just wired up the existing speakers to a
Creative 2.1 speaker system (I took out the amp/panel from the
subwoofer, mounted it in the cab on the bottom section of the speaker
"shelf", and mounted the subwoofer in the pre-existing hole between the
two speakers.) Worked out great, and those are some nice speakers in
that cab!

Marble Madness, Road Blasters, Indiana Jones, and Road Runner were all
System 1 cabs, and they were designed to be 'swappable' (which is why
the System 1 cab is so ideal for swappable panels, natch ;-)

My paper label was for RoadBlasters, so mine was apparently never
swapped out.

I've got a System 1 cab (Roadblasters funnily enough) so if you want some
pictures of the original parts to help make copies just let me know.

Talking of roadblasters I played it through to the last level for the first
time last night.
Talk about evil , only once chance to complete it and no continues!!!!!

Yeah I was surprised how nice the condition is. There are a couple of
gouges that will need to be filled and the bottom needs replacing since
the plywood is starting to delaminate but otherwise its in pretty good
shape. Now I just have to figure out how to get into the damn box that the
speakers are mounted in! lol

I went in through the speaker holes, after taking off the grill. Well,
actually, that was how I did it the first time, when I had a small amp
that could fit through one of the speaker holes.

For the second sound system, I just drilled a hole from underneath, got
out the reciprocating saw, and hacked my way in (making a hole just the
right size for the amp unit from my Creative speakers' subwoofer.) It
looked great once I did it, but it really hurt to have to cut into a cab
like that. I probably won't ever convert a cab like that again unless I
could do it with zero mods to the original.

To be honest. Kevin I'm in two minds about that. It would be nice to
preserve it, sure but it's not something I ever really intend to part with
once it's done - unless someone who really wants a MAME converted System 1
offers me an outrageous wad of cash for it...hint hint 😛

I don't buy into the whole business about the cabinet being all-important.
To me the important thing is the game code - that's the real work of art.
It's a little like getting a priceless picture and looking at the frame.
These arent pieces of Chippendale furniture we're talking about - I mean
they're made from particle board and plywood not solid mahogany.
Admittedly some of them are interesting from a design point of view like
Computer Space, Afterburner, Xybots etc and that's all well and good but
this is just a bog standard arcade cabinet, albeit one of the more
attractive ones.

I'm of two minds on modding cabs, as well. I don't have too much
"modder's guilt" over my MAMEframe cab, as it was in much worse shape
than yours is, but I definitely now like the idea of preserving the
"look" much more than I did, especially with unique cab designs (and I
think the System 1 is a very unique "style" of cab)

Changes that are invisible (such as my hacking in an amp to the sound
box and changing the mounts inside for the monitor) are cool, I guess,
and you're right: in the end, it's just a collection of MDF panels
slapped together. It's only my sentimentality that makes it valuable.

<several interesting points about the validity of the cabinet itself a an
object of value snipped>

Here's another point. How many times have you seen ads on rgvac and rgvam
that say things like "come and pick up this stripped cab or I'm breaking
it up and throwing it in the dumpster?" That would have ended up happening
to mine (The guy who sold it to me is seriously short on space - he has a
working Xybots for sale too if anyone local is interested I can put you in
touch)

Surely no matter what I do to it, it's a better fate than being smashed
into matchwood and forgotten forever.
