Anemic 3Dmark2001 score, why

Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

OK I have this PC, a PII-400MHz 256MB RAM, GeForce 256 DDR, SBLive, etc. I get like 420 or some horrible thing. The reason this is bothering me is because while comparing to other users, I'm getting totally smacked by celery 300A's with crappier vid cards.

Questions:

Is it possible that some folks are cheating? ie somehow misrepresenting what they are actually running the benchmark on?

Does my score seem about ballpark for the described system, or is it high or low?

If it seems low please give opinions on what might be the problem. One guy who's system description was very similar to mine was scoring well over 2000. Whats up with that?

I can get 325 on a AMD K6-2 450 Mhz with a Voodoo Banshee 16MB. I think an Athlon 1000 with a Geforce 2 can get over 3500. Playing quake is ok on the K6-2 as only 8 bit textures are used and there's no complicated transform and lighting involved.

If you read the post "My 3dMark 2001" by FUGGER, there is a post on how to improve your score. It involves formatting the hard drive and installing drivers and defragmenting.
