I'm having a problem that I find a picture, especially black on white uncomfortable on IPS monitors. The problem is best seen if taking a video of a monitor, i.e.

you can see some fuzzy effects in the video, when the camera is very near the monitor, I think it is related to the problem I have. It's best seen in this video after 0:10.

Are there some types of monitors where that doesn't happen?

I found monitors with PWM very uncomfortable to use, but this kind of IPS monitors is still uncomfortable. I need something better for reading text on the monitor.

I'm using DP/HDMI/DVI, I own 3 monitors, this issue is happening with all three of them (Dell P2414H, HP Z24i and Phillips 276E8VJSB). All three of them are IPS monitors, to the best of my knowledge (without PWM, which is the most annoying, but those days are over).

I've got a G-Sync IPS screen, if I get really really close to it, I might be able to see something, just on the edge of my vision.

It might just be that you are unusually sensitive to the slight variations in brightness.

13thmonkey, I indeed have some problems related to contrast sensitivity:

https://dm-ed.com/info/contrast-sensitivity/

Some of the key symptoms are:
  • Sensitivity to strong sunlight and flourescent strip lights
  • Complaining about the text moving
  • Complaining about distortions of the page
  • Finding larger text easier (this can be related to eye-tracking too)
  • Eyes watering while staring at computer screens
  • Getting headaches while trying to read or do mathematics
First 4 symptoms, to a certain extent.

Still, the problem with IPS monitors exists, it's more noticeable to some people.
