Another challenge

Here's another minor challenge that can be added to most
games. I'm just worried that the Big Room might not be big
enough.

Build a Glider Gun in the Big Room.

What should this be called? Conway-Gosper Man isn't
a traditional name.

This *IS* Challenging, and really great idea

However, is it even remotelly possible? Not only will player have to
acumulate enought seeds or blessed water to grow bushes, they will have
to be planted in really synchronized way, plus this will propably
require pacification of room.

on demaind teleporting ability would be propble req. too ...

i guess ill try this one asap :) Conway-Gosper Man, here you go

It would be far better, if he implemented good plugin system which will
allow someone else to develop multiplayer... i'm of course speaking
here about Jade - since in jade, every creature is playable, code is
propably ready (as for other great stuff - imagine that with good
plugin you could controll party of charaters or controll your own pc
and have some scripted npcs on your side)

Gosper gun could be constructed from collision of several gliders, but
setting them up would be quite hard too.

I failed miserably to keep a straight face when I read that

I suppose we should really ask Thomas to implement multiplayer mode,
then, so several PCs can plant the herbs in tandem.

Or make Dungeon Keeper look-a-like, in which you must build a dungeon
and grow/gather monsters tough enough to stop the good guys that come
in to save the world from your evilness.

All that is required is a pacified big room, a means of removing herb
bushes quickly -- preferably Burning Hands, but ball spells work to,
and a growable pattern of herb bushes to start with. A T-shaped group
of four herbs is perfect.

Means of temporarily inhibiting herb growth help a lot. Web or wand
of webbing and Fire Bolt or wand of fire is great and perheaps most
easily obtained combination. Wand of trap creation and Disarm Trap
spell is another choice.

YAGBU: Doors don't work! Even if you kick them down, they leave
behind an invincible doorstep -- herb bushes won't grow on
squares that had a door on them. Wands of digging won't
create a hole on such squares. Pick axes, on the other hand,
will. Even wand of destruction won't help in any way.

No holy water is necessary. You just keep destroying herb bushes
in the proper order untill you come up with situation like
on this screenshot:

Here we have a glider gun just before deployment. As you see, all the
elements (save for the one near the PC) are stable. To deploy the gun,
wait 5 herb generations, then quickly disarm the three traps visible
in the right-hand side osccillator, thus letting it go at the proper
moment.

It took me seven game days to construct the gun after the big room
has been pacified. It took another three game days for the gun to
spawn two gliders. So, picking gliders to destruction wouldn't be
a very efficient way of getting herbs.

vlg file follows. Also, there is a save file at
http://www.my.tenbit.pl/przemek/adom/Mad_Gard.svg
have fun!

Excelent perception and learning scores are side effects of ID scumming.
I've scummed ID for books -- Burning Hands a must, Invisibility
a convenience. After getting umpth potion of invisibility I decided
to do without that spellbook.

Spells
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Burning Hands : 720, 4pp (Effectivity: +25)
Used it a lot for gardening.
Fireball : 318, 15pp (Effectivity: +7)
This too, but only a few times, to recover from very fast
herb growth.
Ice Ball : 657, 20pp (Effectivity: +2)
Ice ball don't destroy herbs. Good to get rid of summoned
spiders quickly, before their webs interfere with herb bushes.
Invisibility : 12, 15pp (Effectivity: +0)
From potion of wonder. Intended to use it after I've run out
of potions. But blessed potions last pretty long.
Strength of Atlas : 1156, 6pp (Effectivity: +12)
Found early, used freely. I walked strained, even tough I
used this spell :) that way my strength did not drop too
mych in ID.
Teleportation : 507, 16pp (Effectivity: +12)
Funny thing, I hardly used it when constructing The Gun.
but it was handy earlier for various reasons.

Lots of other spells snipped.

Stuff list snipped almost entirely. With Strength of Atlas in effect
you can expect a very long list.

I exploited the "piety overflow bug" together with "ice bridges don't
break when teleported onto" and got myself three precrownings in
Barbarian's clearing, and fourth inside the pyramid. Awesome set. The
clearing was chosen to conserve my limited supplies of invisibility.

Potions ('!')
heap of 9 potions of holy water [36s]

I had 17 of them, but used up 8 to create one herb bush. A dearly price
for one misplaced fireball. RNG was obviously dead set against me.

1744 monsters perished under his attacks.

That's not much.

The following monsters were vanquished:
3 cave lions

1 wild cat

Could have easily spared them, there was no accident. But their corpses
are so yummy.

Congratulations! You are my hero. And the life of the party.

Unfortunately, there's no way to record this in the final
character dump. It would be too hard to have the game determine
whether the character created a real glider gun. But i'd love to
see the message:

He created a self-sustaining ecology.

My hero!
