Here's my issue. Erratic temperatures on a known-to-be-good cpu. (Well, until now.)
Seeing this, what would anyone here say is causing erratic temps on my CPU? It's been run for 9 years overclocked (i5 6600k) without issue on a 120mm AIO. I had found an i7 7700k that I didn't know was broken, and decided hey why not, let me try a little upgrade for ol' reliable. Since I was going to try to change the cpu, and want to run the comp the next 10 years as a server, I wanted a new cooler. Bought a PS120SE. I was uncertain how great the compatibility of a 7th Gen cpu was in my z170 board, but luck is not on my side as the computer shut off while trying a bios update. Yes it's connected to a UPS. So bought a used z270 mobo.
Was slightly a pain to get the cooler on, I didn't know the force I needed to push down to apply the second retention screw for the cooler. so I've scuffed the lower edge of the cooler slightly. Can't get it to run stable, with large temp deltas between Core 0 and 3.
Yes I checked thermal paste and all that stuff.
I am probably just going to run a stock overclock since I don't like sitting beside a jet engine if I'm gaming. Package power on this CPU while stressing it is 60W btw.
Any ideas on whether it's the cpu or mobo causing the temps? I've tried now 3 coolers on it (2 thermalright air and a 240 lian li AIO) with the same erratic temps. Unfortunately I don't got extra mobos or CPUs from back then to test with.
