Another over clock

Getting what I think to be a cpu bottle neck on my i5 2500k after I went from a radeon 6850 1gb to a rx 460 2gb. I've heard it's pretty easy to go from a 3.3 to a 4.0 oc on this cpu. I still have the stock cooler from 2011 and ive never redone the paste. I'm noticing full cpu load with Temps ranging from 60c to 75c depending on the game. GTA5 , path of exiles, r6 siege.....

OC or nah? Any knowledge on heat spiking with the oc other than buying a new cpu cooler? If I'm in that 60 to 75c range right now will going from 3.3 to 4.0 be significant in performance / heat increase ?

Definitely get a new cooler for overclocking. You never want to go above 75C for 24/7 use of a CPU, and buy after market thermal paste as well.

Try overclocking without raising the voltage, see how far it will go.

If you're already going to 75c now then yes, an overclock will push the cpu harder and create more heat. You'll need a better cpu cooler than what you're currently using. An oc would definitely help. It would help to run a program like msi afterburner and check both cpu and gpu usage. That will tell you if your cpu is the bottleneck or not.

If the gpu is consistently less, like around 70, 80 or 90% use and your cpu is constantly at 100% then your cpu is currently holding you back. An overclock or new cpu with higher ipc performance will help but that means a healthy upgrade. A new motherboard, new cpu, likely new ram, a reinstall of windows.

It also helps to know roughly where the gpu is expected to perform. This test was using msaa x2 and the 460 was only managing around 41fps. They suggest turning msaa off to improve performance.

If you're using the stock cooler I wouldn't recommend overclocking. A good starting point would be something like a cryorig h7. It's around $35 and is a bit better as well as shorter than the 212 evo. What coolers you're able to use may depend on your case, whether it's wide enough to support varying heights of different coolers. Some air coolers may be too tall since most use the tower design and if you have a narrow case the side panel won't be able to close.

Idling between 30-40c

Core 1 - 30c
Core 2 - 32c
Core 3 - 32c
Core 4 - 37c


Ran prime for an hour (I know it's not that long) peaked at 70c with 100% fan operation.

Peaks between goes between 45 and 60c when gaming gta5 with fans on 100%

Mostly wondering if the idle temp is alright
