so, i've been thinking about upgrading my hardware 'cause i don't know how much long it will last, currently i have these specs:

intel i7-4790k
asus maximus vii ranger
nvidia geforce 970 FTW AC 2.0+
16GB ram ddr3

but with all these issues with the 7700k overheating i've been having second thoughts about the upgrade, if i should wait or not... also i've looked into to the ryzen but the price where i live is still very high so i can't afford it, so what do you think? should i upgrade my hardware now or wait for the next intel?

EDIT: about ryzen, i would be able to afford it i think, but i'm mainly gaming, and games are not optimized for it right now and i don't know if they will be...

Solution
Frankly, 4790k to 7700k is not worth the upgrade. Maybe a 10% to 12% increase in performance, isnt worth the price you pay. Either wait for Coffee Lake(next Intel) or get Ryzen. Ryzen chips are gaming pretty well and there are hardly any performance issues that you are thinking of.
But my opinion is, your cpu is still very good and can easily give you another couple of years if not more. Unless there are any drastic performance hiccups, i wouldnt go for an upgrade. You can get a better GPU though for better gaming.

Yep, Haswell chips will be fine for gaming in the foreseeable future! You could upgrade your GPU to something like a 1070, but to be honest the 970 is still a fine card these days. Like Hellfire said, there is no problem with gaming with Ryzen. You will take a small performance hit, however nothing to be too worried about! And of course with the extra cores you will get far better results in heavily multi-threaded applications such as video editing.

hmmm.. that's the other option i had in mind, getting a watercooler because i think the performance is getting affected by the heat (not running smooth as it used to be, but no hiccup) and a new gpu... is the 1080ti a good option?

and thanks for all the replies!

EDIT: i forgot to say that i've seeing some spikes on the cpu usage while idle, the clock speed goes way high while doing nothing, is that normal?

Spikes? Normal. Even though the PC is idle there are still things that need to happen to keep it running even at 800MHz. My 4690K will occasionally spike to 3.9GHz or maybe 2GHz. Or OR OR. It just depends what my computer needs at the time. Spike to 3.9GHz and stay there for any longer than ~5 seconds would then have me checking my task manager and event viewer and services.

1080 Ti? YES! Ahem 😀 sorry about that. That is my next step I am looking to take. I am also going to be buying the HTC Vive. If I had more than $2000 I would buy the 4790K and sell my 4690K for a buck fifty. I wouldn't go as far as a new motherboard, RAM and CPU nor do I think you should when you already have the 4790K which if upgraded doesn't justify the expense. You already have 16GB of RAM. The only move I would make is to a Cryorig H7. It's better than the 212 Evo which I use for my 4690K. That is not to say the 212 is a slouch. It keeps my temps. in check even with a 78F+ ambient temp.. I did add an extra 120mm fan.
