Another which PSU to choose thread

This will be my system:
i5 CPU
p7p55d Asus motherboard
1tb F3 Samsung HDD
Ati Radeon 5850 GPU
G.Skill RipJaws 4GB 1333Mhz cl7 ram
Samsung dvd optical drive
Thermaltake element S case


So which from the next PSU would you choose:
- Corsair HX620w / HX650w / TX650w / VX 550w
- Antec TruePower NEW 650
- Enermax PRO82+ 525w / PRO82+ 625w
- Thermaltake Toughpower Standard 650w / Toutghpower XT Standard 650w

I'm planning to buy one of those PSU's, which one should I take? If you have a better option do share but note I don't live in America and my choices are more or less limited. I'm not planning to run crossfire in future, also the main feature I'm looking for the psu is its power efficiency and its quality.

HX650 or TPN650, depending on price.
The Corsair 550 is plenty for the system specs you gave, but I like modular.

Corsair has a reputation for excellent high quality power supplies. They consistently earn high marks in technical reviews. They are stable, reliable, and come with a 5 years warranty.

Of the 4 Corsair models you listed tha HX650 is the newest.

The Antec TruePower New 650 is a very good power supply. The Truepower New models are an improvement over some of the older series.


Here are the official power requirements for the ATI Radeon HD 5850 video card.

ATI Radeon™ HD5850 System Requirements:

PCI Express® based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard

500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75 watt, 6-pin, PCI Express® power connectors.

600 Watt or greater power supply with four 75 watt, 6-pin, PCI Express® power connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode.

A high quality 650 watt power supply will allow upgrades in the future. You could add a second 5850 video card for Crossfire mode. If you are positive you will only use one video card, then the Corsair VX550 is an appropriate choice. The VX550 can easily power a system with any single video card.

Thanks for the info so far but beeing modular really isn't important for me, in most cases the cables can be hidden also the case doesn't have a window so it doesn't need to look all good (cableless)

airflow is an issue in small cases eh.

Yes I know, also the psu has a seperate room in that case so hidding the cables would be much easier but again I'm mostly looking for a good, efficient and reliable psu.

Arghh.. sorry for double post I ment Thermaltake element G not S -_- also can't edit.. oh well. Element G has better airflow than S, more fans (side panel)

ahhh ok well there ya go, for some cases, esp no name standard atx, airflow is an issue with some of these psus, esp the ones that are sli or cf certified with the extra wires lol

The choices you gave are all good quality , high efficiency unit's.
Take hiding cables out of the equation and you're left with the fact that the modular Corsair HX650 is slightly more efficient than it's non modular TX650 cousin.
By "slightly more efficient" I'm talking less than a 1% difference.
The Thermaltake XT is the most efficient unit out of your list, beating the Antec by just .3% , it's also $60-$70 more expensive than the TPN650 or HX650.
Nothing wrong with Enermax, but thier warranty is only 3 years compared to the 5 and 7 year warranties on the Antec, Corsair and Thermaltake unit's.

Now onto a whole new decision, do you want the flat black modular cables of the Corsair or the sleeved cables of the Antec ?
It's a hard choice, I generally allow finances and pricing to determine which one.
They're both the same price on Newegg right now ( although there is a $10 rebate on the Corsair that makes it so )
There's also the Corsair 7 year warranty compared to the Antec's 5.
It's your choice, I'd use either ( and do )

Go for the best price you can get. No matter which power supply you purchase you will not be disappointed.

They all are same priced (2 € up or down) except for the Thermaltake beeing 30€ more (but not that big difference beeing little more efficiant).

Hm as you mention, I haven't paid much attention about the warranty, Corsair and Enermax have 2 years warranty, Thermaltake 3 years and Antec 5 years (at shops which have lowest price also which have on stock).

I already decided for Corsair or Antec so for the full warranty of the Corsair I went to the official distributor's page and they are selling the HX650 for 30€ more. The shop of the TPN650 is already official distributor for Antec so it has full warranty.

So just because of the warranty I'm taking the Antec TPN650.
