I went with the desktop and now it's the other way around with a different laptop that's being offered for trade for my desktop. Thinking of making the trade, using the laptop to game in the interim and putting the laptop up for sale as I could make enough to build or buy an even better desktop. Thinking of reselling the laptop for around $700 or so. Thoughts?

Current Desktop:
CPU: ryzen 5 2600x
GPU: RX 580 8 GB
RAM: 16GB RAM (likely clocked below 2666)
MOBO: ASROCK b450m pro
500GB nvme
500W thermaltake PSU

MSI Modern 8RDS Laptop:
CPU: i7 8565U
GPU: RTX 2070 max Q
RAM: 32 GB
I believe a 500GB or 1TB nvme or SSD

Not a fair question because of somebody's affinity and/or needs for space and portability.
Plus for desktop is relative power and be able to upgrade easily.
Personally, although I have couple of laptops I don't like them because they are mostly "As is" and difficult to repair.

Oh yes, I'm well aware of this. So analyzing just the hardware/power of the two per se, largely in terms of game performance.

If starting from a blank sheet I’d pick a desktop over a laptop, mainly for the ability to upgrade and better thermals. However out of the 2 options you listed the laptop is a much better gaming system, the 2070 max Q looks to be much stronger although the information I found wasn’t great and a i7 8565U is good enough.
