Hi I have an Antec Sonata (first gen) case with an A64 3000+ .. I've noticed in the past week or so that it's gotten really much louder and I am starting to get artifacts on the screen when playing games.

I felt the side of the case and it seemed very hot as well. So alleviate this heat I took the side off and it seems ok and fan got quieter.
I think it's the CPU fan that was getting louder. I'm using the stock fan.

I would bet, though against your guess, that it is the video cards fan is failing and heat is building up from that getting circulated within the case which leads to the CPU temp sensors to think that it is heating up and subsequently running up the fan speed on the CPU, and that is when you hear it.

I just noticed the 120mm case fan at the back is no longer spinning .. therefore none of the heat is getting pulled out of the case. Could that be the reason for the loud CPU fan?

Once I pull the side door off, the cpu fan spins down in a couple mins.

yes that fan would be the problem. The heat is just being trapped in the case with it off there is at least some cool air that gets in. replace the fan asap. Cases are usually disigned to be closed for good air flow. IF youdont you can run the risk of burining something out.

Thanks, I'll do so immediately tomorrow .. I've been running my pc for days with the cover on ....
